Ph =] LETTERS Performance praiseworthy ‘he introduced the song ‘‘Biko’’ Bowie’s last, the audience was sub- jected to an echo effect the likes of which I had never heard before — in comparison, the PNE Coliseum sounds accoustically perfect. Given the millions of dollars spent on this stadium and the fact that one of its prime uses is for concerts, the designer could have come up with something better. Of course, it’s just another example of Socred in- genuity. The second set belonged to ex- leader of the art-rock group Genesis, Peter Gabriel, from whom I had expected a semi- political performance dealing with social isues ranging from peace to alienation. But halfway through, I was surprised and delighted when he dedicated his hit single, “‘Shock the Monkey,’’ to the black people’s struggle in Africa. And when Gabriel came on for his encore, in- stead of playing one of his may hits, dyrics borrowed from South Africa), about South African stu- dent leader Steven Biko who died in a police detention centre. As the song was ending, Gabriel raised his right fist and shook it in support of the South African strug- gle. His final words for the evening were, ‘“‘It’s now up to you.” In contrast, Bowie’s perfor- mance was a let-down. Bowie is liv- ing on his past great hits of the early 70s. His musical compositions still indicate he is a superb musician, but his cynical lyrics epitomize the decaying society in which we live. After seeing this concert, I feel that it is extremely important for newspapers such as the Tribune to promote progressive musicians. For it is through people such as ‘Peter Gabriel that we can build hope for a better society, to replace cynicism and apathy. JOIN THE GREAT EAA a For any of your travel needs, big or small.
