Throwing Within the Form

Potters on Vancouver Island are going to be
very busy this coming Auguar. The
Noborigama wall be firing... and firing and
then cooling. To coincide with opening of
the kiln there will be a workshop by Texas
potter Dannonm Rhudy. She has a unique
method lor constracting her "porcelain
landscape” vessels, and, over the course of
the cwo days workshop, will demonstrate
her methods of working with learher hard
molds

Bannon, whe now makes her home in
Paris, Texas (yup -just like the film) was
inspired early on by the landscape of her
childhood in Southern Indiana. The glacial
moraines were covered with great
hardwoods, broken by ravines with owscropa
of shale, samdstare and limestone. There
were small fields, meadows and lakes
bordered by brambles, horserails, wild roses
and honeysuckle - sounds pretty idyllic!

Whereas the landscape affected her
aesthetic, the rural lifestyle impacted on

her workechic. She gained valuable
experience improvising with what was at
hand, be thac throwing a meal together
for ten friends, or fixing broken bits of
machinery or furticure with few toxols or
materials. Valuable skills indeed for a
future potter.

Dannen's early influences clearly resonate
int ber currenc work and method of
working. The pocs are constructed cut of
distorted and incised textured slabs that
are pressed into a thoown leacherhard
mold. The pieces are then thrown on the

inside to work the various pieces together.

After the pieces have set wp she removes
the leather hard mold-shell and,
depending on the form, throws on a lip or
arim. The paeces are chen fired in
reduction, wood, salr or soda to enhance
the monf of landscape.

Dannon Rhudy's workshop should be a
great chance far pocters on both sides af
the Georgia Straight to get together. It is
an added bonus chat the opening of the
Noborizam, happens the morning of the
workshop.

The workshop, co-sponsored by the
Tozam Cultural Sociery and che Porters’
Guild of BO, wall be held ar Malaspina
College, August 22 and 23, with a potluck
and slide show on the evening of the
