A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, July 12, 2000 HEAVY MACHINERY had been in use the last while to clear the buildings from. the former highways ministry works yard on Park Ave. at Kenney. About half of the land is being bought by the city which has plans to construct a new firehall there eventually. The remainder will be put up for sale by the province. City buys the property to hold a new firehall THE CITY is buying just under half of the 4.2 acre site on Park Ave. which once contained a highways ministry works yard. The 2.4 acre section will eventually be used to house a new fire hall. Contractors have been at the location the last while demolishing and re- moving buildings from the property. It is now zoned for mul- ti-family residential use. The last tenant at the property was Nechaka Northcoast Construction Services, the area’s pri- vate road and bridge main- tenance contractor. It then moved out to a new location west of the city and the property has ° been vacant ever since. The land is owned by B.C. Buildings Corpora- tion, the crown corparation which acts as the provin- cial government's landlord. Corporation official Kathleen Elliot said the property must first be offi- cially subdivided before or “Beveled CUSTOM FRAMING & GALLERY Recent Works by “« Patricia ‘O'Connell _ «Margaret Faber. - | New Arrivals: Handerafted Rugs From Afghanistan the sale to the city goes through. “We have had a couple of inquiries about the other half, basically for a multi- family use,” she added. “One is for senior accom- modation and the other for apartments.” The corporation must now determine a value for the piece of the property the city isn’t buying and it must then decide how it will sell it. “It may be a direct listing by ourselves or we could go through a realtor,” said Elliot. Although there was ex- tensive engine and other maintenance work done on the site over the years, an inspection has given it an environmental green light and no remedial work is needed, she said. “It has been checked and it’s clean,” Elliot added. “The property is well within the required stan- dards and there is no con- tamination.” She did say two under- ground fuel tanks need to be removed. A great portion of the land is covered by asphalt and its removal, depending upon future uses, will be up to the purchasers. f {PARTS & PERFORMANCE TOMOBILE ENTHUSIASTS” i Auto Parts * Parts Delivery eee © Car & Truck Accessories © Nitrous Fill Station SPECIALIZING IN High Parformance Parts ~~ Phone — "=. MP holds firm on not taking pension plan SKEENA MP Mike Scott says he won’t be among Cana- dian Alliance MPs who will ask for their constituents’ blessing to join the controversial MPs’ pension plan. Several of the party’s MPs have said they may join a modified version of what many of them denounced as the “gold-plated” MPs’ pension plan. Scott said if they want to go to local voters in the next election, that’s fine with him, but he’ll continue to turn down a pension that would be worth at least a mil- lion dollars tohimi =~ : “I feel I’ve made a cammitment and I feel that m word is warth something,” Scott said, He’s among 32 of Alliance MPs who aren’t part of the plan. The remaining 25 are part of the plan either be- cause they automatically had to be part of it if they were elected in 1997, or by voluntarily joining. Scott also noted he’s not sure whether he’ll be going before the voters again. “I haven’t made a decision as to whether I'll run again in the next election,” he said.
