Our local Vancouver Moun- ties who are in the best pro | a circuit outside of the major leagues, will soon be playing regularly at the Stadium in Vancouver, While I enjoy baseball very much I can’t get the least bit excited over the fact that the again. The only thing Canadian about them is that they play 50 percent of their games here, and that they are partial- ly owned by a Vancouver man. There are only two Canad- ian boys trying out for them up at Yuma, Arizona, and ac- | cording to the press the lik- elihood of them making the | team is. nil, The Mountie management is ; really pleading poverty this j year. I say it will continue | that way as long as they con- tinue to ignore the local boys Mounties are on the hustings : SPORTLIGHT BALL! eur teams of Senior A and B throughout the Lower ‘Main- land, so that Canadian talent can be developed. : The local industrial league, : comprising four teams which - play at Powell St. grounds draw practically as good at- tendance as the Mounties. Baseball in Vancouver is left solely to parents of child- ren to help form teams in the Little Leagues and Babe Ruth group. There are no organiz- ed coaching or training schools for players whatsoever. On many occasions I have gone to Confederation Park in North Vancouver on a Sunday to see a ball game, only to see the teams unable to start play- ing because they lacked an umpire, The desire of youth to play baseball is fantastic, but I. think this sport, like any other, will only develop when the local and senior govern- ments toss some money into the promotion of sports in general. If money was found to build the new stadium for the Am- erican-Mounties, surely it can be found for coaches and ums pires for youth to play base- | in respect to sponsoring amat- HANK AARON ball.
