CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM PARKS A RECREATION COMMITTEE A meeting of tne Parks A Recreation Committee was held in the Terry Fox Library Meeting Rooms on Tuesday, Febrary 10th, 1987, at 4:45 p.m. In attendance were Alderman George Laking and Alderman Mike Gates. Also in attendance were K. Janna Taylor, Parks A Recreation Director; Bram Hoogendoorn, Parks Superintendent (Item No. 1); Debbie Johnston (Item No. 1). CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES That the minutes of the meeting of the Parks & Recreation Committee held on February 3rd, 1987, be taken as read and adopted. Item No. 1 Wellinnton Park Debbie Johnston spoke to Committee in regard to the installation of playground equipment in the park. Committee pointed out that money had been placed in the provisional budget for playground equipment. Recommendation That the Parks Superintendent identify an area in Wellington Park for the location of the playground equipment. CARRIED Item NO. 2 Crier The attached proposal from Marguerite was presented to the Committee. Mike Gates indicated that he knew the name of a couple who would be prepared to possibly act as town criers. Town Recommmendation: to hold a contest at this time for town crier; but to contact the couple who Mike Gates has Not referred to. CARRIED /2. Item No. 1987 Bantam Tournament The tee. attached letter was presented to the Commit- Recommendation: That we proceed with the same policy es in past years; 50$ rental for ice; room rental waived; city operate the concession. CARRIED Item No. 4 ~1 88 Bantam Tournameo.t The tee. attached letter was presented to the Commit- Recommendation: That we approve the dates in principal for the 1988 Bantam Tournament and that detai.ls be worked out ar. a later date. CARRIED Item No. 5 B.C. 'B'rovincial Rinaette Chamoionshios The attached 1;ee. letter was presented to the Commit- Recommendatio&z: That the Ringette Tournament be approved similar to the approval given the Bantam Tournament. i'r CARRIED Item No. 6 Viscount - Softball Diamonds forth a request from a slowpitch group (adults) who wished to utilize all four diamonds at Viscount. It was pointed that the Committee had met the previous yearoutwith residents who complained about adults playing on the diamonds closest to the houses bordering the school. Janna Taylor, Parks A Recreation Director TO: MEMORANDUM PROM: Marguerite Morrison, May Day Coordinator RE: Town Crier In refer ence to the attached infer mation, I have had several opportunities to see t.he public/community benefits that a municipality receives from this honorary relation position. In all public/civic events the Town brings everyone's attention to i'ocus on the beginning of an Crier event. In Halifax, Peter Cox re-activated the position cf the late 1800's/early 1900's. However, in many municipalities a contest is held In relation to the annual May Day celebrations, the 65th birthday, and many other civic functions, I would like to recommend that Port Coquitlam consider establishing t is volunteer, honorary position. Method: A contest, for all egos interested in the position, to be held prior to the 1987 May Day. Cost: Minimal for the contest, suggest 4250-4500 for winner to have a durable costume for all functions. Responsibilities: City to make this an official nonorary position of the City. It would be aur 1ntent1on to organ1ze a tournament which would have included in 1t International hockey teams. In order that we may encauraae these 1nternational teams we must know what our 11m1ts are and what type of scheduling we may be able to organ1ze such that it becomes attract1ve for teams from Japan, Austrelia and Western Europe. In order that these plans may be made we must first have a comm1tment from the City with respect to the arena complex. We would require the enti re arena complex fram Saturday, March 26, 1988 to and including Sunday Apr11 3, aur 1988. If we are successful in secur1ng the necessary assurances it would be intention ta approach the City of Port Moody for use of their arena for part of this t1me as we invisaae arranaima a tournament schedule which would accomodate sixty-four teams, in four d1visions, w1th the pres.'.dents d1visian being showcased at +he Port Coqu1tlam arena complex.
