With two people to watch and a constant dialogue, they have no trouble holding our attention. Sunday: For those of us concerned with the aches and pains of throwing, Tom reminds us that the entire body is in- volved in the throwing process, not just the hands. To relieve some of the body stress of wedging, try wedging on the floor where the whole body weight can act on the clay. Adjust the height of your wheel and/or seat to straighten your back, and maybe use a brick or block of wood to level up your feet. Alleviate the stress on the wrist whilst centering by keeping the wrists straight, using the left hand on top of the clay, so that centering can be accom- plished with the bent fingers of the right hand. He reminds us that clay is alive at the time we use it, and it is erucial how it is touched. Trimming is an important element on the Marshes! pote, adding a 'point of grace'. They make no apology for trin- ming lines and leave a strong definition between thrown and trimmed areas. Only the foot rings are burnished, and after firing these are also sanded to give a non-scratch base to the pot. The wheels spin at a much faster pace for the trimming process. They reckon te spend only & quarter as much tine on the trimming as on the throwing. Pots are secured to the wheel, either using small lugs of clay, or by lightly damping the rim of the pot and inverting it, or more usually, by using e chuck. Several chucks were thrown on Saturday. When these don't measure up, anything suitable is used. To trim the large pot, Tom uses an ice-cream bucket with a thick coil of clay attached to the rin. Trisming shows feeling for & pot. Consider the inside of a pot very carefully before trimming, and trim the outside to match. Trimming can change the whole character of a pot. Teapots are considered in detail, as they are a favorite with the Marshes. The teapots are inverted to trim the base. The spout area is pared thin. An umbrella spoke is a recommended tool for making the strainer holes. The total area of the holes should be greater than the pouring 8
