(received via email oe Canadian Red Gross CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD __ The Mail Bag Let’s remember that airport lands already have a use Dear Sir: I Was surprised to read that the entire land mass sur- “rounding the airport has quickly and without objection fal- _. ten under the jurisdiction of the City of Terrace. _ Where will the money to develop this land come from? Because being a taxpaying citizen of this community, | can tell you I can’t afford to pay any more. ‘If-it.weren’t for the fact hat the “ancillary lands that are bordering on the Beam Station Road to the west and High- way 37 to the east’ is prime pine mushroom habitat, this household couldn’! cven afford Christmas, When I read that holiday sales are better than merchants expected I have.to ask myself if the merchants in this town have made this correlation yet? ~ Do they not understand that if lots of people have a little extra money annually it’s more likely to be spent in their store, then if a few people make a lot of money once and provide a few permanent jobs or worse, not create any new jobs bul. merely transfer them from the downtown core and farther away from your. business. I'm sure it will be - quieter, ] understand (he need for more laid in this growilg com- munity, bul let’s be realistic. Doubling the size is nol the kind of growth this community needs, certainly not in my ‘lifetime. [° really doubt that: the city council has the maturity or foresight to understand the huge responsibility ils has taken on. I fear that in their eaper and frenzied scramble for short term profits and quickie solutions to longterm problems (i.e. the dump and the debarker) that it _ Will soon be gone and this saddens me. Lots of jobs depend upon SCI’s chipper Dear Sir: The North West Loggers Association thanks the public and city council for their patience in dealing with the noise . issue of the chipper al Skeena Cellulose Inc, We would like, however, to point out that the chipper is in an area zoned for industrial use, particularly industrial use. To the best of our knowledge, SCI is making every effort to minimize the noise in a manner that is economically fea- sible. It would scem reasonable for the public to support a company and industry the community depends on, espe- _ Cally during these tough economic times. The chipper at SCI employs nine people directly, but creates many spin-off jobs within this community. The wood processed employs 10 direct SCI contractors, who in tum employ approximately 210 or more people (families). Each of these 10 contractors also provides employment for numerous subcontractors, such as fallers and truckers. Given the high pulp content in the Kalum Forest District, ifthe chipper were shut down the job losses would extend to the sawinill facilities, the pulp mill in Prince Rupert, gud chip haulers who transport those chips. There would also be an impact on companies who pro- vide services and supplies. These figures are substantially higher than the nine jobs mentioned in the media. This is an issue that requires careful consideration and resorling to unreasonable recommendations could have far reaching implications. Bill Sauer, Secretary/Manager, North West Loggers Association Tam sure being as [ pick mushrooms that many will say you don’t pay taxes on mushrooms so you shouldn’t have an opinion. Bul I ain also a registered voter and a laxpayer, and anyone who doesn’t think mushroom: picking is taxing: should try it. Ultimately this is the truly wonderful thing about the airport mushroom patch. It's there for everyone and anyone can get there even if they don’t have the luxury of a vehicle, . ; , Mushroom picking has been an integral part of this com- munity for a couple decades now, perhaps: in that greyish, unregulated and silent zone but it’s been there: I think we can all say goodbye to that, and only hope that as the air- port is developed, care will be taken to preserve as much of the mushroom patch as possible for as long as possible, and that public access to the bulk of the Jand surrounding the airport will not be denied. . Let’s try to remember the Jess fortunate members of the community. Let-me also say that just because no one has taxed mushrooms yet, it does not justify destroying it and Iet’s also remember that in 1998 there was no Japanese lumber markel, but there was definitely a Japanese mushroom market. , Mushroom picking is a gamble but fortunately the airport lands provide excellent habitat for several species of woodpeckers including the pileated woodpecker and I can tell you thal sceing one of these amazing birds is reward cough even on the days when you get skunked, Whatever happens, once it is gone, it is gone, for me, for you, for your children and for your children’s children. Lorraine Fortuer, Terrace, B.C. What's this? Dear Sir: What is going on with our government? And why do we sit idly by and let them do it to us? We have no say in school and hospital funding. We have no say in, or vote on, the Nisga’a trealy. We aren’t even allowed to smoke if we so choose. They say they are giving people a tax reduction. Oh yeah, just like the G.S.T, rebate and the other changes they make for child tax benefits. The people still get shafted. So who pays for all the things the government does to you but are not for you — you do, 1 for one don’t know where the moncy is spent by the government but I would sure like to know. _ And please don’t tell me we live in a democratic country. I don’t believe we do anymore. Oh and by the way where are they getting so much money for land claims, when they have no money for the care of tie elderly, the sick, and the future of this country, the edu- calion of all our children? , Laura Reibin, Terrace, B.C. No need to snap An open letter to: The lady at the Annie musical. What do you think my daughter will remember about that day? The wonderful musical that she was enjoying or the lady that shouted at ber and made her cry? That was to- tally uncalled for. After sitting for two and a half hours, 5-year-olds tend to fidget.
