_ Timbermen oldtimers win big The Terrace Timbermen put together a winning string of five games to capture the six-team Schenley Division of the Cana- dian Oldtimers’ Labatt World Cup ‘90 hockey tourney at San Diego last week. Timbermen, who won special jackets for their efforts, were never pressured in any of their games. They were one of two, three- team groups in their division. The round-robin portion had them play games against the trio in the other group. They opened with a 5-1 vic- tory over Anchorage Oldtimers. Afler a day off for the golf tourna- ment they played two games on Wednesday the 21st. Timbermen won both games — 7-1 over Shipman Corners, Ontario and 11-3 over Yellow- knife Ford Model ‘A’. That put them in the division semi-final, where they blanked Yellowknife 5-0 in their second meeting. The championship contest put them up against their first-game opponent — Anchorage. Ter- race won this game and title 4-1. Singles hot, teams not in youth bowling Singles bowlers held their own, but the teams might as well have stayed home. It was the zone reps in senior, junior and bantam boys and girls in competition at the B.C. Youth Bowling Council’s ‘‘four steps to stardom’’ finals at Kelowna on March 17. Each group had 12 zone en- tries — winners from zone play- downs were held earlier. Our singles players held their own, but in the six categories for teams we registered three 12th- place finishes and three i0th- place windups. Last placers for team play were Kitimat Bowling Centre in both senior boys and bantam boys, and Prince Rupert’s Totem Lanes in junior girls. The 10th-place finishers were Terrace senior girls, plus Totem Lanes’ bantam girls and junior boys. David Halley of Terrace had the best effort in singles, In his five-game junior boys’ set, he placed third overall’ on a score of 1,050. The winner of this section was 130 pins up on Halley. Two youngsters earned fourth-place singles honors -- Darcy Netzel of Terrace and Kathleen Ogilvie of Prince Rupert. Netzel rolled a 1,250, 291 pins behind the winner who rolled four 300 games. Ogilvie had a 755 score — on- ly 18 pins out of first place. Tracey. Blaus of Smithers placed sixth in junior girls’ singles. Ninth-place windups were turned in by Kitimat’s Ber- nie Whelan in bantam boys and Terrace’s Debbie Lebeau in senior girls. Panthers win tourney The, Alkali Lake Panthers needed overtime to defeat Kitimat Kougars 6-5 in the championship game March 18 for the Acklands Kitimat . Ladies’ Hockey Tournament. The four-team series also : featured Prince Rupert Raiders against Terrace Trojans in the battle for third and fourth places. Rupert won 5-2. Trojans went winless in the three-day series. In the round- robin portion, Trojans lost 6-1 to Kougars, 6-1 to Panthers and 5-3 to Raiders.
