Corporation, bought up the 158 acres of number one grade agricultural land, planning to have it rezoned as industrial property — in spite of there being more than 2,000 acres of land already zoned | industrial nearby. Richmond municipal council eagerly ac- cepted the developers scheme and rezoned the land. The whole issue came to a head during the municipal election, campaign when a petition cam- paign gathered 9,000 signatures protesting the rezoning. The public outcry against the project reached the ears of the provincial govern- ment and they ordered the land held for its present use pending a public hearing. Municipal affairs minister Jim Lorimer and health minister - Dennis Cocke were present at the _ Minoru Pavilion which filled to capacity a half hour before the meeting began. The opposition speakers drew heavy applause and it was apparent from the start that the developers had little support. A number of speakers pointed ‘out that B.C. receives 60% of its farm produce from California and present, indications are that this supply will dwindle and possibly cease within 10 years.
