THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM course or we could arrange special courses during the daytime and require employees to attend. In either case the cost per person for the course itself would be $15.00. However, in the case of the daytime courses, the City's cost would include the loss of time while away from work. The course lasts a total of eight hours and is preferably covered in four two-hour lessons, We would have about fifty drivers eligible to attend but could obviously not allow them all to attend at the same time. They would probably have to be split into three separate groups, The disruption to our work due to employees attending the course during davtime working hours would be very great and is not recommended. The Committee secommends that all employees be encouraged to take the regularly scheduled courses being held at Port Coquitlam Senior Secondary School commencing March 6th at 7:30 p.m. and continuing for four consecutive weeks, and that Council agree to pay the $15.00 course fee for any employee attending the course. We would expect that the participation using this approach would net be anywhere near 100% but that with encouragement from the Safety Committee and hopefully the C.U.P.E, Local, we would still get a number of our drivers attending. . rJ ITEM IIT Re: Application for Secondary Highway Grant Applications for grants for the construction and maintenance of sccondary highways must be in to the District Engineer by February 4th, 1980. As Council will not yet have adopted a final budget by this date, it is necessary for Council to consider the work to be includéd in this application at this time with the understanding that it is contingent on the final budget being adopted. ; . « The provisional budget. includes the sum of $108,000 for secondary highway maintenance. This compares with $30,000 in 1979, However, it was felt that it was important to do some major pavement Overlay on Pitt River Road between MacLean and Shaughnessy, particularly in view of the possibility of the secondary highway being eventually declassified. This section of road rates high on the list of roads requiring overlay and has a high priority in our overall road system. If our appli- cation is approved by Highways, we would be recovering between $43,000 and $54,000 depending on whether the work is seen by Highways as being maintenance or capital expenditure. Lhe Committees recommends that an application to Highways be made in the amount of $LOB;OO0T00 to include the major resur- facing of Pitt River Road from Shaughnessy to MeLean. ‘ m/e submitted, 1 RS pon. “olrsls’ P.
