HERE ‘N THERE YVONNE MOEN I will give you a little his- tory. of Al and Betty Bella- my taken from notes written by daughter Heather, an aid ‘worker in Afghanistan, who returned and was present at. the celebration May 1954. Al Bellamy was ona 40-day leave from the Korean conflict, going back to his Vancouver na- val base, Esquimalt. Betty Braun was going to B.C. from Saskatchewan, to visit "her sister. They got-on the same Greyhound bus in Cal- gary and Betty got off in Ab- botsford. - Al was handsome in. his blue navy uniform, and while on the bus he spotted this very pretty girl. After he introduced himself, he asked her for her address, wanted to. write her when he got drafted to Halifax. He wrote it on a book of matches. Soon after, he was aboard the frigate Prestonian, in the North Atlantic. Al was part of a squadron of ships placed at different points . from Iceland to* Canada, protecting the aerial route . of Princess Elizabeth, (now Queen Elizabeth) who was - flying to Canada for a visit. One night during the middle -watch, he was in the .com- - Munications room, copying ‘broadcast, and was killing time cleaning out his kitbag. Coming across the old book of matches, he was surprised to remember writing Betty’s address on it. Letters arrived from the Caribbean, Londonderry Ireland, Malta, Venice, Ath- ens and the Statacona Naval Base in Halifax. = When Al was discharged in June 1955, he went to see Betty in Swift Current, Saskatchewan where she was working in the Dixie Lunch Restaurant. The.,bus ride from Halifax to Swift Current was a gruelling five days and nights without a break, so the special lemon meringue pie that Betty had the cook at the Dixie ‘Lunch make for -him, went: un-° touched. All he wanted to do was sleep! In the couple of days they had together, - ’ Betty introduced him to her - family before he left to see * his family in Alberta. Before leaving for Al- berta, Al proposed and Betty accepted. The wedding date was set at a later time after Al got up the courage to ask Jacob Braun for his daugh- ter’s hand in marriage. On — the wedding day, Wednes- 1955, they woke to the first blizzard of the coming winter. ‘Family . and friends braved the snow to travel many miles to Breechy, Mennonite. Church. The ‘couple was married by Rev. Froese from Lucky Lake. Ei- leen Bellamy, Al’s sister and Betty’s sister Leona were bridesmaids. Cornie Braun, Betty’s brother, and Irvin ’ Bellamy, Al’s brother best man. The reception was held in the church basement. ’ Returning to the farm outside of Beechy, Al and Betty got the “honeymoon suite” — the south room in the farmhouse, and those stranded because of the storm, squeezed into every room in the house. Al and Betty started their married life in- Calgary, where neither of them had jobs or a place to live.
