Acc eet era A Napanee TE se ge eS bln Ra waa es EA oil fa Le rT Neti akas Aue | John Cashore Council Shorts Preserve city’s green space THE CITY should reserve land between the highway and the rail- way tracks for a linear park, ac- cording to the Terrace Beautifica- tion Socicty. The society envisions a narrow band of parkland stretching from the Sande Overpass along Hwy 16 West to Kenney and eventual- ly all the way to Frank St. And they're calling on the city to lake action now before the land is ail developed. Beautification society treasurer Conrad Ganzenburg called on council not only to prevent fur- ther development along the strip, but also to encourage current businesses there to relocate else- where. The CNR owns the land and has supported similar municipal park projects in. both Houston and. Prince Rupert, he added. Ganzenburg said the society was taken by surprise when a large SAAN store and Robin’s Donuts outlet was approved for colstuction between the over- pass and the Co-op, That’s an area the sociely had planned to plant trees. “‘It’s really taking greenspace in the centre of town that will be gone forever,” he said. Ganzenburg said the city will lose the opportunity to set aside parkland for the future if it allows continued haphazard develop- ment in the arca. The issue will come up for debate again at this Friday’s noon recreation committee meeting. Mountainvista park will wait COUNCIL has turned down pleas from Mountainvista residents to develop parkland there this year. A petition was presented to council calling on the city to de- velop the park now. Councillors noted the property in question is slated as parkland in the land use contract that gov- ems the subdivision. Developer Rossco Ventures would be required to pay some of the park development costs under the contract provisions. To develop the park sooner, the city would have to pay the survey cosis. Committee members said it seemed like a waste of money to pay for something the developer will eventually have to do, But they agreed to consider the idea again next year, particularly ifthere is a service club interested in helping develop the park. Postal clutter JUNK MAIL, newspapers and flyers are cluttering Don Gil- landers front yard and he wants the city to do something about it, Gillandcrs says five Canada Post mail boxes and a Skeena Marketplace box have been moved across the strect to in front of hls North Eby home. ~ Most of the people who pick up ’ gaail there are from outside the - yeighbourhood, he said, and as a ~ gesult don’t worry aboul the mess they make. So far he hasn't been able to persuade the post office to back "+ down. ‘They've said they'll put them where they want,’’ -He’s now asking the city to in- tervene. His request was referred to the public works committee. B.C. ISN’T caving in to pressure from the right on the issue of na- tive land claims, says aboriginal affairs minister John Cashore. Cashore was reacting to the release of a provincial position paper that indicates the province wants final settlements of land claims to make up less than five per cent of the B.C. land mass. “That’s an estimate that's based on the fact that the popula- tion of First Nations is about 5 per cent of the province and ~ we're saying at the end of the day it (treaty lands) will be less than five percent,’’ he said. ‘In some situations it could range slightly higher or lower depending on demographics and geography,”’ he said, Cashore says nobody should be surprised that natives will only get a small fraction of the tradi- tonal territorics they claim. “We are not recreating the past, we are preparing for the future,’’ he said. Cashore said the document was not produced as any kind of kneejerk reaction to criticism the government has faced. ‘“We are incrementally, one step at a time, fulfilling our committment to do what we said we would do when we went into the treaty making process,’’ he said. Cashore said the paper has been reviewed by cabinet and now goes out to the public for review. He said comment from various groups and interested parties will help guide the government ‘‘in producing a final mandate that will then guide us as we go into negotiations at the various tables,’ Cashore calls criticism that the government is gearing up for an election ‘“‘cynical.’’ ‘‘This is a very appropriate and reasonable step in the process,’’ he said. *'The debate could go on and on as to whether there is some sort of diabolical thing going on here. “But let the public look at it objectively,”” he said. ‘This is not a fait accompli. We need to put something out there for the public to comment on.’’ The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 31, 1995 - A9 Groen Tip from Environment Canada CE [vs the engine Fa idle means more carbon dioxide in the air.
