One im- _provement he says, is the instal- “lation of a facsimile equipment linking the -148 InfoCentres in : the province and a second is a ‘$3,000 capital grant for each “center toward building improve- “+ ments intended to enhance ac- -cess and general appearance. -. Another improvement, says Reid, will be to the uniformity. of the system. He says this has ‘been accomplished in the past through signs and printed ‘materials, but soon each In- ~ . foCentre employee will be wear- . ing a uniform as well. ‘‘It will go a long way toward establishing a “sense of professionalism throughout the network,”’ he says. : ‘Our Travel InfoNetwork will be among the most sophisti- cated in the tourist business ‘anywhere, says Reid. ‘‘Our “visitors bring so much to the .-provincial economy that we “must ensure they are treated ina -a first class manner.’’ And with “We will be able to” circulate “reports on road conditions, new attractions and all manner of -tourist advisories almost instan- ‘taneously across the Province.” Terrace and District Chamber of Commerce spokesman Doug _McLeod says they are pleased with the ministry’s initiative in ‘view of the fact that there seemed to be a waning of inter- -,est. in InfoCentres in recent “years. He says the local group is looking at improvements in ‘ signs and the general appearance in. the building and hope the _.work can be done soon. ’ He adds also that the program ~ is well-timed — the number of “inquiries and visitors is up dra- “matically from 1988. According to McLeod, there have already been about 700 phone and mail k, he says, - Fax systems and upgrade » for tourist Infocentres inquiries this year compared to 400 in 1988. And the InfoCentre reports that last week alone 98 vehicles stopped for information and there were 80 mail or phone inquiries. It looks like a good year for the tourism industry. In a separate development, Terrace Chamber secretary- manager Bobbie Phillips recent- ly said a panel of. nine regionally-based tourism repre- sentatives will re-open and operate the Infocentre at the Douglas border crossing. The result, she said, will be that information on all regions of B.C., including the Northwest and Terrace, will be uniformly available to tourists as they cross ‘from the U.S. into B.C. Previously, tourist informa- tion at Douglas was strongly biased in favor of lower main- land ‘and Vancouver Island at- tractions.
