pln. TERRACE — After examining the Phase I proposal recently issued by the Interior University - Society, the School District 88 board of trustees has given unanimous support to the con- cept of establishing a university’ in Prince George. ; The motion of support carried at the board meeting Oct. 11 reverses ‘the trustees’ stance taken’ several months ago: when the interior university idea was initially introduced. At that time they had misgivings about the impact on Northwest Communi- ty College. - The Phase I report, however, proposes to use satellite cam-. puses that would involve existing community college facilities throughout the north. Trustee John, Pousette said the univer- sity as outlined in the report could play ‘‘a significant role to integrate existing resources’’ in Three more years of servi Following a recommendation made by the B.C. Transit Authority, Terrace city council has selected Coastal Bus Lines Ltd. as ‘the ‘‘preferred operator” for the three-bus Ter- race Transit System for the next three years. An annual operating agreement slightly over $200,000 will be negotiated with Coastal each year based on their submis- sion to B.C. Transit. =. According to B,C.. Transit’s Small Community Systems Manger, Steve New, the pro- “posal submitted by Coastal Bus Lines showed a ‘‘clear advan- tage’ of $72,000 over another submitted - by Perimeter Transportation Ltd. of Van- couver. Coastal listed a total operating cost of $209,254 for the first year of operation, and fixed costs of $73,743 and $76,461 for wages, benefits, fuel, tires and safety inspections, for the second and third years of -- operation. This totals $359,458, compared to the Perimeter pro- posal of $431,059. Coastal Bus Lines’ parent ‘company, Farwest Bus Lines, has been in operation for over 30 * years and operates a fleet of 88 — vehicles composed of transit, school buses and highway equip- ment. Farwest/Coastal currently operates the Prince Rupert, Ter- race, Kitimat and Kamloops transit systems with over 80 ‘employees and a fleet of 33 buses. According to New, Coastal has operated the local - transit system since it began in A CHILDREN’S PE. Kim +JEREY BRODEW Live in Concert at the R.E.M. Trustee Edna Cooper told the board that the system may have benefits for. the school district, allowing teachers to take up-_ grading courses locally. At the Oct. 1! board meeting Secretary-Treasurer Barry Piersdorff advised trustees that . ‘the capital expense proposal for building the new secondary school in Hazelton required an amendment to increase funding. The board voted to submit an aniended plan for $22,517,698 to Victoria, up from the original estimate of $20,237,120. Piersdorff said the. change reflects cost inflation from the time the plan was first drawn up, and an increase in the size of the building due to higher enrol- ment. Secondary, school enrol- ment in Hazelton has gone from 1980, and under the new agree- ment the system would be managed by the current opera- tions manager, Dave Storey.
