North of Coquitlam lies a spectacular backcountry of mountain lakes, sub-alpine meadows, cirques, rugged peaks, waterfalls, emerald creek canyons, tidal freshwater sloughs, and remnants af old growth forests. Extensive recreational use occurs in much of this area, but is in jeopardy due to proposed developments on several fronts, The Burke Mountain Naturalists propose that this area become the subject of a Class A Provincial Park Study. The areas proposed for study are: urke Mountain Special Features: Munto and Dennett Lakes, environmentally-sensitive high ¢! on bogs, pockets of old growth forest, spectacular vistas, outstanding potentional fo, 999 country siding and family-style day hucing on the undulating plateau. Issues: Hotel/condo/resort development. Logging of last stands of old growth forest. (2) Widecon Valley Special Features: provincially significant fresh water tidal slough, spectacular family-style hiking in Widgeon Valley, canoeing, waterfalls, hanging lake, backpacking, exceptional spawning and rearing habitat for several salmon and trout species, bird-watching, important wildlife habitat. Issues: Hydroelectric development, water diversion project, logging. (3) Or Creek Special Features: significant recreational potential, access to the top of Coquidam Mtn., important spawning and rearing habitat for salmon. Issues: public access, water diversion project (4) Pitt Luke (west side) Special Features: largest tidal freshwater Jake in North America, diverse water recreation, wilderness hiking, rugsed alpine back country, Indian Pictographs. Issues: long-term logging plans. (3) Upner Coquitlam/Pinecone Lake Wilderness Area Special Features; contains the only undisturbed low elevation old growth forest Within 150km of Vancouver, habitat for old-growth dependent species, only known Canadian habitat for some species, back country hiking, rugged alpine areas. Issues: GVWD & Fletcher Challenge logging plans.
