ee ee eee as: GARY WILKIE got a big surprise last week when he opened up his newspa- per and discovered’ the police were looking for him. He was reading a story about local RCMP being on the lookout for a suspicious man in a pickup truck seen hanging around § Kiti K’shan Elementary School on May 7. The man, it said, was trying to offer children a ride to the public library, and gave a good description of both Wilkie and his burgundy ’81 GMC Sierra pickup. “They had me down to a T,” Wilkie said. “‘And the licence plate number they gave was close, But it wasn’t yellow lettering on the side of NOT A CHILD MOLESTER: Gary Wilkie and his pickup truck were at Kiti K’Shan Elementary to drop off his stepdaughter on May 7. But somehow his shouts to her were misinterpreted by other students as a suspcious invitation to get in the truck. the cab. That's just rust.” Wilkie drove his stepdaughter Kim to the school that day but they arrived late., She then started searching the school yard for her Thermos, which she’d lost a day earlier. But she was going to be late for an event in the school library, Wilkie said, so he shouted to her to get in to the library. Somehow, he says, other children nearby must have interpreted what he said as an invitation to pick them up and take them to ihe library downtown. “7 guess all these kids assumed J was telling them to get in the car,’” he said. Hunted man victim of confusion After the incident was reported, all the children in the school were wamed to beware of the suspicious man in the old truck. Wilkie was puzzled by what hap- pened the next day he drove by to pick up Kim. “I pulled up to the school aid all the kids just scattered.”” He figured it out after he read the newspaper and said he had to laugh. Wilkie is the K-Mart auto depart- ment manager, and bis truck is often parked there — in view of the windows of the RCMP detachment. “Everybody in town is looking for me and my truck — and it’s parked right across the street from the cop shop and they couldn’t find me.”’ . & Advance polls lf you can’t vote on election day, Monday, June 2, you may vote at the advance polls.
