unique look behind the Iron 10, ENTERTAINMENT, THE HERALD, Wed. Feb. 23, 1977 Curtain and its Winter Festival. It is rare to be invited by the U.S.S.R. as the .official ‘‘Honoured Guest” of the Winter Arts - Festival. Few western world celebrities get such an invitation, This year, Canada’s Bruno Gerussi, star of The Beachcombers and Celebrity Cooks, received just such an invite from the large U.S.S.R. agency InTourist and the State Committee for TV and Radio. A few years back, so did Bob Hope, And Mary ' Tyler Moore. Mr. Gerussi The annual Russian’ Winter Arts Festival is a time for fun and games and letting off steam, Russian style. It's also a way to make the long winter bearable and an answer to the western world’s Christmas season. And it is celebrated in just about every'city in Russia.at the same time. Sunday, March 6, at 8 p.m. CBC-TV will telecast the Superspecial — Gerussi in Moscow, providing Canadian viewers with a . “ON HIGHWAY 16" 1737-20In AVENUE C) Oo fe. Gerussi in Moscow will take Canadians to some of the hundreds of festival activities, as seen through the eyes of Bruno. And it’s a city of contrasts. From, wedding cake buildings that make up the Kremlin rimming Red Square, to the ultra-modern, super- efficient subway system and the modern gray blocks that service 7% million Mosecovites daily.’ The national peyche, too, is set aside for the light-hearted atmosphere of the festival, with dancing, singing, inking in the streets, Producer Clare | Walker and the small Canadian production team ‘EF captured much of that . gaiety in Moscow and other cities as time allowed. Filming days stretched from 7 in the morning until beyond 11 at night in an . effort to present the whole ’ picture. ‘The Canadians were ' allowed to film and visit paris of the country and estivities never before shown in the western world. Exciting sequences include highlights of the world- subdued Russian: “Gerussi in Moscow" a visit to the grand Bolshoi Ballet, Performing Swan Lake. A. truly stunning visual encounter is the trip inside: the Hermitage Museum, which contains one thousand rooms of great master paintings. Ironically, as Clare Walker states, “It was a cultural shock to simply walk into that museum. The art is superb, but pales by com- parisén to the architectural majesty of the Hermitage building itself!” ~ Included in Gerussi in Moscow are many examples of the varied styles of Soviet artistry, including the Don Cossacks, the Armenian’ Folk Dance Ensemble and even an interview with actor Misha Kozakov, probably the most respected actor in Russia and known as “..,.the Richard Burton of the Soviet Union...’’.- He is seen reminiscing with Gerussi about -his.visit to Stratford, Ontario, 20 years ago. (Gerussi, then starring at the Stratford Festival, first met Kozakov at that time.) national television, his whirlwind schedule did not permit him to drop into a - television studio; instead, Russian TV sent out a film crew to do an on-location interview about Bruno’s impressions of the country. This was later aired over Russian TV. Lest it be sald that Russians do not celebrate a holiday season around New Year’s, it certainly is Christmas of a sort at that time of year. The annual Russian Winter Arts Festivaleees people dress in gay costumes, the ap- pearance of Father Frost, a character much like the western Santa Claus, and all over the country people decorate and light up their “New Year’s Tree”. It boils down to people havin fun as people do the world over.
