THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER _ Canadian Labour Congress Official Statement on the November 8th Election YOUR OPPORTUNITY ON NOV. 8TH ~ The Canadian people will have an opportunity to set the stage for a dynamic era of sustained eco- nomic growth, full employment and social security coupled with a new amity among our people and new heights of educational and cultural progress. HONESTY AND INTEGRITY IN GOV'T. It has always been, and is now, the conviction of this Congress that substantial and continuing advancement toward these goals can only be assured through a government of men dedicated to public achievement and not to personal gain. TRADE UNIONS SUPPORT THE NDP Events have reinforced our conviction that men and women thus dedicated are most certainly those who support not only the program and policies but the ethical foundations which are part and parcel of the New Democratic Party. On this faith in social democracy and social jus- tice, the trade union movement represented by this Congress has supported and continues in this election to support the New Democratic Party. THIS IS AN UNNECESSARY ELECTION This Congress must raise its voice with those who believe that this election has been called un- necessarily and with a surprising lack of scruple by the present government. REDISTRIBUTION The Canadian Labour Congress shares the view of those who believe that the time for this election was following the revision of constit- uency boundaries which are 20 years out of date and after the disposition of important business which remained before Parliament at dissolution. There is no reason why such im- portant legislation as Medicare and collective bargaining for the Civil Service could not have been dealt with before Parliament was dismissed. This, however, in no way absolves us from our duty as citizens to consider the issues and use our franchise according to our decisions. LABOUR’S RESPONSIBILITY The Canadian Labour Congress, at its 1958 convention, decided to assist in the formation of a new political party, the present New Democratic Party. That decision was reached without in any way whatsoever interfering with the democratic tight of every organization affiliated to the Con- gress, and every individualin those organizations, to pursue with perfect liberty their own political beliefs. THE NDP RECORD It has been the view of the vast majority of delegates to CLC conventions that the NDP is the party which has a program in accord with the aims and aspirations of the Canadian labout movement. In the last Parliament, and previously, the NDP proved an effective force in bringing into effect legislation of great benefit to the Canadian people. This included improvements in Old Age Security, the introduction of the Canada Pension Plan, the adoption of a Canadian flag, and the establishment of a labour code. The formation of an NDP Government, or strengthening of the NDP representation in the House of Commons, is the manner in which workers, in common with other voters, can best express their urgent desire for the adoption of such pending legislation as Medicare, the intro- duction of collective bargaining in the Civil Service and other important measures. ELECT NDP CANDIDATES We must not fail in this election to elect to Parlia- ment men and women with the courage and conviction to stand up and speak up for honesty and integrity, as well as efficiency and intelligence in the leadership of this nation. Men and women of this calibre are definitely in the ranks of the New Democratic Party. PROVEN LEADERSHIP OF T. C. DOUGLAS The New Democrats’ leader T. .C. Douglas deserves the unqualified gratitude of the nation for leading the fight for Medicare, the fight for better pensions, the fight for co-operative federalism, the fight for honesty in government and for many other things.
