Reviewing 47-years of revolu-
tionary progress in the Soviet
Union, Daniel Mason in the U.S,

_Fraserview vets fight to save homes

While preparations for Remembrance Day were being made last week to

honor the veterans who fought “‘for home and country”

the Liberal govern-

ment in Ottawa and officials of Central Mortgage and Housing in Vancouver

delivered a large number of ‘‘Notices to Vacate

* to about 20 Fraserview

veterans. Most of the 50 veterans who refused to sign to pay the higher
rents have seen active service and one of them lost a leg in World War 2.

by demands that the veterans be
given a hearing, Instead he has
ordered C,M.H.C, and the sher-
iff’s office in Vancouver to pro-
ceed with evictions if veterans
and their families do not vacate
their homes,

Some of the 20 veterans who
received notices ‘to vacate have
also received a second notice,
It is expected that most of the
additional fifty, who have cour-
ageously refused to accept the
higher rent edict, will be served
notices soon, The next step by
officials will be to apply for a
court order instructing the
sheriff to evict,

Faced with this emergency 130
Fraserview residents met last
Sunday at the Fraserview Com-
munity Hall to decide on their
course of action, Two commit-
tees were set up by the veterans
to fight the evictions and to assist
hardship cases,

Also last week the veterans
sent a telegram to Governor-
General Vanier asking him to
help them in their fight against
higher rents and eviction,

The, telegram said; “We deeply
regret due to intransigence of
both elected and paid officials
of your government, we are
forced to use this method of seek-

ing redress to our grievances,”

The Fraserview Veterans,
Tenants and Homeowners Asso-
ciation which is spearheading the

fight, is appealing for supprt
from all civic-minded groups,
veterans, unions, ratepayers and
others, to support their fight,
