Two eggs, one fowl he Multilateral Nuclear Force (MLF) is a product of .= U.S.-West German “thinking” on how best to trans- _form NATO into a nuclear “striking” force, capable of re- ducing the world to ashes. Under this MLF scheme the West German war instigators hope to get their fingers on the H-bomb trigger. To many NATO “alliance” members this MLF has been highly disturbing. Among these is Britain’s new La- bor prime minister, Harold Wilson. Now visiting Washing- ton and Ottawa for “talks” Mr. Wilson comes with a new proposition. Why not call this MLF nuclear monster the ANF (Atlantic Nuclear Force) instead of the already dis- credited MLF? : In its present tentative outline the ANF would have fewer Polaris-armed surface ships than the proposed MLF, but its “scope” would be enhanced by the inclusion of air- craft, submarines, and other nuclear bomb “delivery”’ sys- tems. So away with the MLF and up with the ANF. Al- ready Bonn is shouting “Hoch der ANF” as it sees better possibilities of moving closer to the H-bomb trigger under ANF than MLF. Money-wise, neither the British taxpayer nor those of other NATO countries, including Canada, will save one red cent because of any switch from an MLF to an ANF. Quite the contrary. No wonder even the most reactionary papers, including The Province, asks with some asperity in a recent editorial, ““Are we going stark raving mad?” A timely question. Canada is now spending $1.5 billion annually on so- called “defense”. Only a short time ago our “defense” de- partment was bludgeoned into purchasing some 300 U.S. aircraft at a cost of $1 billion. Now our Defense Minister is supposed to be going pop-eyed because Washington is demanding another $400 million for a new covey of U.S. jet fighter-bombers for the RCAF! : Moreover, despite our colossal annual arms spending, Canada has none of those engines of destruction pre- sumed to be essential for an MLF or an ANF. That mean; more billions down the arms drain to “catch up”. Even the Province admits we’d be better occupied if we used this money for “building schools, roads, etc.” We congrat- ulate the Province for a rare flash of common sense. The Pacific Tribune has been saying the same thing for years. —~Whether the NATO alliance adopts a made-in-the- USA MLF or a made-in-Britain ANF by a Labor govern- ment, the end result will be the same; empty pockets for the common people, and a standing menace to world peace. Poe Caney aoaes : The wrong pocket very toot of CPR track from the Atlantic seaboard to Vancouver Island had its “free” land grant, millions of acres of it. To build the Esquimalt and Nanaimo (E. & N.) railway to provide rail service to Vancouver Island, the CPR got 1,900,000 acres of rich mineral, farm and tim- ber lands plus a Federal cash grant of $750,000! Over the years this CPR rail ‘“‘service’’ has been re- duced to practically nothing, but the CPR has held tight- ly to its profitable land grants for speculation and profits. Recently the powerful MacMillan, Bloedel and Powell River company, together with Crown Zellerbach “bought” 229,000 acres of this rich E&N timber lands from the CPR for some $50 million, a rare bargain to “share” be- tween themselves on a 2-to-1 basis. The provincial government (i.e. the “people’’) expects to get about $10 million “severance tax’ out of this mon- opoly bargain sale. The CPR pockets the other $40 mil- lion or more. The “deal” is reported completed, but there’s still some “unfinished” business to be debated. The E&N lands were for “services” to be rendered. These “services” have long since ended.
