‘Only war that makes sense is war on A call for stepped up efforts to end United States aggression coupled with the unfolding of a campaign to end poverty in Canada has been made by William Kashtan, national leader of the Communist Party, Speaking at the opening session of a meeting of the party’s Na- tional Committee in Toronto Kashtan declared: ‘The only war that makes sense today is the war against poverty.” Commenting on the speech from the throne, he charged that past performance strongly sug- gests that what the government will undertake will be a skir- mish not a war on poverty,” To end poverty, he declared there must be policies of full employment, of raising pur- chasing power and wages, of making free education avail- able to all young Canadians, of providing low rental housing, of undertaking a national medicare plan at this session of parlia- ment, not ten years from now, poverty — and of increasing pensions to all senior citizens outside the scope of the Canada Pension Plan, Kashtan emphasized _ that “ending U.S. aggression in Viet- nam has become the most urgent business confronting mankind,” Of President Johnson’s call for “unconditional discussions,” Kashtan said that in reality this is based on the following con- ditions: “that alleged aggression by North Vietnam must stop and that the people of South Viet- nam must give up their struggle for national. independence and freedom, This is not uncon- ditional discussions, but a de- mand for unconditional surren- der, This is not a policy of peace but a policy of brutal conquest,” He noted that “The Pearson government, tied as it is to support of the fundamental po- sitions of U.S. policy, has been under sharp criticism for failing Frequent contributors to columns of labor press TIM BUCK, outstanding Canadian Communist leader, whose articles and statements dealing with problems fac- ing Canadian workers were frequent ly featured in our columns during the past 30 years. This qualified position of the Pearson ~ government is typical of its fear to publicly: dissociate Canada from US. policy.” What is needed, Kashtan urged is “a widening and extension of the actions of the Canadian people to bring pressure upon parlia- ment directed: to not only debate the crisis in Vietnam which af- fects us all, but to call upon the U.S. government to alter its policies and withdrawits troops.” WBA PARLEY BACKS MEDICARE The Vancouver District. con- ference of the Worker’s Bene- volent Association (WBA) held on Sunday, April 25 protested the U.S. action in’ Vietnam, The 80 delegates in attendance agreed to write Prime Minister Pearson and U.S, President Johnson, The conference~also took a stand on medicare, A resolution sent to the Federal government asked for a comprehensive medi- care scheme now.
