Lh MLR a ||, || 1 | REPORT ON EUROPE. * Rte Women have | new freedom THOSE WOMEN you occasion- ally hear parroting the opinion, “Oh, my dear, those dreadful Russians—we'll have to fight them some time, you know,” might get a jolt if they could tour Europe—the Europe that now belongs to the people—as we did this summer with other mem- bers of the Canadian youth dele- gation, In Poland we talked with one young woman who had been forc- ed to witness the murder of her family by the Nazis and then had been taken to a concentration camp as slave labor. Such women, and there are few in Europe to- Gay who have not some story of horror to tell, know the fear, the despair and terror of war because they have lived it. You cannot tell such women that war is inevitable, that the Russians menace their way of life. Millions of them owe their freedom to the Russians, without Whose sacrifices they might still have been slave labor in the ghastly pattern of life planned by the Nazis. In a talk we had with one wom- an worker in a large nationalized factory in Czechoslovakia, she ex- pressed the heartfelt sentiment that you find everywhere among the people in the New Demo- cracies. “We do not want war,” She declared. “We are too busy working to rebuild our country. We are working for our own fu- ture and the future of our chil- dren, There is no future in war. War can only destroy.’ | * x: x TODAY, in Poland, Czechoslo- vakia and Hungary, women are taking a full part in. rebuilding their countries and we were im- Pressed by the new status they have won. Nursery schools, children’s cen- ters, factory creches and can- teens, cheap laundry and mend- ing services—all these make it Possible for women to work in industry without sacrificing their families and homes, Married Women can obtain a wide variety of part-time work. Opening and Closing hours of stores are ar- ranged to enable women workers to do their shopping. These are Simple things, perhaps, but they Mean a lot of women who work. No wonder, with the horrors of War behind them and a new life unfolding, the women of the new Europe everywhere express their fervent desire for peace.—ELSIE BRANDON, We Always Sell for Less Army and Navy will never know- — Real estate board picketed Members of New York City Tenant Councils picketed the Hotel Commodore, scene of a four-day meeting of the National Association of Real Estate Boards, to prevent attempts to knife rent controls and public housing. OUR CHILDREN Progressives children THE CHILDREN of active progressives can be among the most fortunate of children, and indeed hundreds of them are. These are the child jectives in life, and carry these ship with members of their fam- ily. ~ Many parents, concerned with the changing world we live in, and actively engaged in this change, are the best there are. These are the people who know _the truth and help their children to understand it, so that when their turn comes, they too will be ready to take up the fight for a better world. These are the peo- ple who understand and cherish the rights of all individuals and teach their children to cherish them. These people, because they be- lieve in the rights of all human beings, and have the desire to live with them on the basis of friendship and understanding, start right in their own homes to practice these principles. These are the children, exposed as they are daily to the conflicts and uncertainties, the corruption and the lies, who can bring their problems home, confident of hon- est, sincere and definite answers. These are the children who are ren of parents who have ob- objectives, into their relation- not falsely protected, or fooled in- to believing that the outside world is all stardust and wine, but are given every encourage- ment to explore for themselves, to see life as it really is. When the time comes for them as young men and women to take their place as citizens they can do so with confidence, proud of their parents who back them up. * * * BECAUSE SUCH parents know that neglect and lack of affection breeds hate and resentment, two qualities progressives without in the future they are planning, they give their children all the love they need. Fighting against inequalities and racial prejudice outside the home, no real progressive could stand by and watch members of his own family adopt these false attitudes, so that these children bring to their adulthood a genu- ine respect and admiration for all fellow men. : Since these parents are concern- ed with a future for all children, their own grow up with a broader conception of the needs of others. and their own needs are given consideration at home. There are many children who come from such homes, but un- fortunately there are others, whose progressive parents hever stop to think of them as the adults of tomorrow, and of these people, more next week—VERA MORRIS, . I had the kids busy helping to make colored pine cones for the fireplace, and we are quite proud of our accomplishment. For a greenish blue flame you use cop- per sulphate and coppér’ chlor- ide; for red flames, strontium chloride; for green flames, borax or barium chloride; for orange flames, calcium chloride and for blue flames, copper oxide. The cones should be dry and the mineral salts finely ground, Melt eight ounces of wax in a tin can placed in hot water. Add six ounces of salt and stir well. Re- heat as wax cools and hardens. Lay the cones on several thick- nesses of paper and with a whisk broom sprinkle the cones thor- oughly, turning them over for complete covering. . You can also treat rolled up magazines and paper in this fashion too, and if you do hap- pen to be short of presents this year, these serve as a very wel- come gift (for those with fire- places, of course). * * * IN ENGLAND a short time ago, the labor shortage was so acute that one progressive-mind- ed laundry installed an up-to-date nursery on the premises with a qualified matron and two nurses to look after workers’ children. Now it has so many women ap- plying for work that it has to turn large numbers of them away. Nobody needs to be reminded of you are anything like a normal house- THE NEED for all of us keep- “ng a critical eye on our school boards is indicated by the actions of a certain Tory school trustee in Toronto. When letters were sent in com- plaining of a very dangerous fire hazard in one of the schools—a wooden fire escape was obstruct- ed—this member passed it off as “communists trying to stir up trouble.” There was no investi- gation, of ‘course, but ‘f a few hundred children were caught in that burning school there would be more than Communists trying to stir up trouble. In another school there are so many rats in the basement that the janitor has to go down armed With a couple of brooms before lunch hour and recess to shoo them off before the children come down to eat their lunches or play. When this situation was brought to the attention of the school board this self-same Tory roared, “It’s the communist rats we want to get rid of!” and the matter was shelved. However, we don’t have to look at Toronto and their Tory rats in civic offices. We have plenty of our own kind and the sooner we get rid of them the better. You can use your last few days before the civic elections well in talking to your friends, neigh- bors and relations.
