Those volunteers, who have given countless hours of service over the years, have contrib- uted to Mills Memorial Hos- pilal’s success. Looking back 50 years, I feel it is a great privilege to still be able to meet Vera Frank, one of the original 17 women who formed the’ Women’s Auxiliary at the” Red Cross Hospital in 1948. - Seventeen ladies from the community representing lo- der the leadership of Vera in 1948. Over the next few years Vera continued on as the president and contributed to the Auxiliary’s success, Vera Frank, born Vera McInnes, was bom June 5, 1908. She was the first white child in the Bulkley Valley. Tn June 1925, Vera gradu- ated from the Smithers School and went on to study to become a teacher at the University of B.C. She left U.B.C. in 1930 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a year of teaching training. After university, she returned to Terrace and took a job as a substitute teacher at Tapley. She then applied for a teaching posilion at the Terrace High School and was accepted. In 1934 Vera resigned from teaching to marry Ian Frank. Ivan is from the well- -known family of Henry and - Mattie Frank. cal women’s groups met un- © In 1959, since both her sons were in high school, Vera went back to teach at Skeena High School, where she stayed for ten years until she was transferred to Caledonia, where she taught French. Vera now lives at Ter- raceview Lodge. Another women who has been instrumental in the Auxiliary, is Margaret O’Brien (bom Margaret McLaren). She has been in- volved in the auxiliary for 17 years. | Margaret was~a dedicated volunteer who gave two afternoon a week to unpack- ing and marking donations and keeping the Thrift Shap tidy. Helen has heen a volunteer at the hospital Auxiliary Thrift Shop for 21 years. She said a friend belonged to it first and talked her into volunteering. Helen, at the time, had retired from working at Ter- race Drugs, so she felt she had some free lime. She has how been volunteering for 21 years. Last but not least is Giusappina Bernardo. Givsappina said she started as a volunteer two weeks after Margarct O’Brien (she’s worked for the Auxil- iary for 20 years.) And she too is still a dedicated volunteer in the Thrift Shop. AU three of these wonder- ful ladies donate two afternoons a week to the Thrift Shop, They fold ‘clothes, unpack boxes, put out the garbage and clean up to get every- thing ready for business. Thank you to Vera Frank for helping to start the Aux- iliary in 1948 — she lead the way. Also thanks to Margaret, Helen = and lion as volunteers. Without them the Hospital wouldn't be able to purchase equip- ment they need. Bill held Marcia close. “Honey, the police were hera with a social worker. Edna took the boys fo a psychologist. The psychologist Sent a report to the polica, It accuses us of physically and sexually abusing the boys. They've interrogated everyone in town,” Marcia gasped, “Bill, what are wa going ta do? Thase les will dastroy our reputations. We'll ba pariahs In this town, | know what your horrible ex-wife is doing. As a counsellor, sha had a duty to the pub- lic to make sure tha reporls were accurate, These lies fulned my mariage and reputalion, Make her pay for my mental distress!” The counsellor (ried to stay calm, “Your Honor, | reported what the boys told me. They said Bill abused © them, and | belleved them. It’s my duty to protect the children, not his marriage, You can't blame me for your wife walking aul!"
