The Village of Peace Senior Care Society, a charitable organization founded by the Missionaries of the Poor, wants to offer seniors an alternative to Ter- raceview and the Willows. ‘We want to build a place for people who want to live independently but could use a little bit of help,” said Lori McGinlay, president of the Village of Peace Senior Care Society. McGinlay explained the house would be for elderly people who want to live in a family atmosphere, but who also need minimal care. Two nuns Would live in the house lo provide 24 hour assistance, Everyone living in the house would have their own bedroom, sink and washroom, but the kitchen, living room, garden and recreational area would be shared. “It wouldn’t be a hospital environment,’’ she said, McGinlay said the house will be non-denominational and welcomes all seniors living in the area. Monthly occupancy charges will be chatged to caver operating costs. McGinlay said the sociely is currently looking for land within or close to the city boundary for the pro- ject. She said its hard to find a piece of property in the city without going through rezoning hassles. The Missionaries of the Poor are a Roman Catholic Religious Congregation of nuns from Brazil who came to Canada in 1995, They came to Terrace because the first sister in the congregation, Sister Maria Raposo, was a missionary from Terrace. The organizations does not intend to be funded by the government. If anyone would like to donate to the pro- ject, contact: Village of Peace Senior Care Society, 4829 Hamer Avenue, Terrace B.C., V8G 2E5. ~Accou ntability , Mew Affairs Minister Jenny Kwan will host a public meeting on local government accountability on Thurscoy, November 26, 1998 in Terrace, The Minister is seeking public input an passible changes to the Municipal Act planned for 1999.
