August 21, 1991 Depots springing up again for fall pine mushroom trade | by Sheena Falconer It’s pine mushroom time in Ter- race again, and several depots have opened up in the last week. Alpac is buying at the old Dog’N’Suds, ADS is out in Thornhill by the Copperside store, and Matsumora is by Gus’s family recreation centre on Greig Ave. The place to be for mushrooms last year was up in the Cranberry Junction area, and this year more than 50 baskets have already left Terrace airport. Where are they coming from? Well, that’s any- body’s guess. For those of you who are new to Terrace, these mushrooms are the elusive pine mushroom that is highly valued by the Japanese and sends even the most sedentary Terracite out to the bush in hopes of capturing some of the moniey- making fungus. Mushroom pickers should be warned, however, that bugs and bees are not the only wildlife out there. Bears play a strong role in this area of the bush. People get lost and help is not always around the comer. Go with somebody who proponents. knows what they are doing, and make sure you take supplies in case you do get lost. It is also the opinion of seasoned pickers that very young children do not belong in the bush, Pickers should ‘be dware that raking or disturbing the moss while picking mushrooms damages the habitat that supports the next season’s crop of mushrooms. Strong, dedicated pickers can get pretty angry if they go out to their favourite patch, only to find the moss torn up.
