TECHNO TIP Is your glaze soluble? Glazes are glass and we tend to think of them as timeless, indestructible. However all glass leaches to same extent when it comes into contact with water or acids, especially if the contact occurs over a period of time or the acid is hot. You can do a quick test on your metal-oxide-containing glares: Fill a glazed container hal! full of vinegar and leave it for several days, Dry the item and compare the colour and gloss of the surface above and below the vinegar surface line, Any difference indicates that the glaze is subject to leaching. There is a way that you can amplify the result: If your glaze is white or transparent add a lithe cobalt and do a vinegar-leaching teston it. Excessively unstable coloured glazes can easily turn white with an overnight vinegar leach, IF yours does you need to adjust the chemistry of the glaze base or choose a more slable base, For more information on making your glazes sale check this page on the Internet: hitp:! fdigitalfire.com/education! glaze/leaching.him Techno Tip is prepared by Tory Hansen and generously sper- sored by Platnsman Clays Lim ied it Mfedicine blend. tf yee herve questions for Dowty, please sera Crean ta Cie eater a tive Cela!
