PRESIDENT'S REPORT How does a person describe three hectic years on the Potters’ Guild Board? Many words come to mind: rewarding, frustrating, insightful, disappointing, interesting, confrontational, and so on. During the past three years in which we have estab- lished a profile in our community, I have felt that the focus of the Guild has developed. This has been achieved through the Gallery, the Newsletter, work- shops with the Emily Carr College of Art, awards to promising students at various colleges, and participa- ton in numerous events in our arts community. | have to admit a personal satisfaction in secing the attendance at the visiting artists’ workshops increase. The workshops provide an opporturity for the mem- bers not only to meet with various artists, but also with each other, and to realize that we have a unique and ie community held together by a common Credit must be given to the many people past and present for their valuable contributions: to the members who have offered their suggestions to the board, to the hardworking staff and volunteers in the office and the Gallery, and to the present Board of Directors and the membership for their continuing faith tn the organization. Inthe past, Guild activities were not always carried on on a day-to-day or weekly basis. Since the move to Granville Island the amount of work and decision- making has increased. Many of the board members have sacrificed a lot of time from their own work to keep the Guild functioning smoothly. One of the results of being spread so thin Is that some aspects of the Guild's activities were not resolved as quickly as expected. Not surprisingly, this generated some criti- cism and some unexpected friction. The sense of en- tering uncharted waters was at times overwhelming! The format of the newsletter, the monthly meeting, gallery exhibits, the Christmas sale seemed like sacred and traditional events, but changes were made to them in an attempt to streamline the Guild. It requires a tremendous amount of organization for some of the events and the efforts of several people immediately come to mind. Many thanks must be given to Terry Ryals for his exemplary accomplish- ment sorting out the books, D’Arcy and Ron for their Guidance in gallery matters. Sandy Korman and Coralie Triance for their running of the Gallery, Jan Kidnie and Anne Tolmie for their attention to details and reminders of Guild business, Nathan for his shoulder to cry on, and many others for their support. lam very optimistic about the future of the Guild, and I know that under Tam's stewardship the Guild is in good hands. I hope to be making pots again, and will spend some time pondering the near future. Sam Kwan ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING At the Annual General Meeting held on January 25th, 1990, at the Granville Island Information Centre, the reuiring President, Sam Kwan, presented his report as printed above. Kathryn Youngs, Treasurer, reported on finances [see statements reproduced here], and discussion of proposed and planned publications and exhibition took place. Coralie Triance, Gallery Man- ager, reported briefly on the status of the Gallery. As Sam Kwan, D'Arcy Margesson, Cherle Marklewicz, Terry Ryals and Ron Tribe's 3 year period on the board was over, the following people were elected by accla- mation to fill these vacancies (Retiring members on the Board may stand for re-election): Heather Chapman, Carol Klasen, Elwin Lowe, D'Arcy Marges- son, and Laura Taylor, Within a weck, the new board met to appoint an executive and committee structure, as follows, with revisions still possible: Contirtued on page 3
