Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, January 31, 2001 - CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag _ Treaty input a farce Dear Sir: Every now and then [ think back to our days of land claims negotiations with the provincial and federal governments and of all the time preparing and organizing that we put into each meeting. We had voted in a representative to handle each one of our various issues of survival that ranged from water rights to business employment. The first thing we were told was that land claim negotiators did not negotiate business proposals. They asked what other concems our non-Nisga'a community had. These concerns were either expressed by our various representatives or our elec- ted head representative, This process was repeated at every meeting thereafter and always with the same results — nil. We didn’t find out until later that the only mandate these federal and provincial negotiators had was something called, “Nisga’a Negotiations Openness Proto- col”. In short these were just information related meetings and there was no man- date to handle third party concerns. I’m sure these government negotiators gol a lot of amusement out of our wasted ef- forts. There was no funding available from the province to accommodate our own re- presentative or no consideration was given to such important issues as water- shed protection, availability of firewood, employment opportunities etc. Yet the NDP found it acceptable to - make a cash transfer of $14,445,800 to the Nisga'a government even though it was the responsibility of the federal pov- emment to make such a cash transfer. It would have been preferable to send out an occasional newsletter rather that listening to a troop of highpaid negotia- tors giving filibusters at meetings that were falsified as being meaningful and productive to our non-Nisga’a community. If third party members in other land claim ateas want more of this taggedy ann representation then just vote NDP at the next provincial election, Lloyd Brinson, Nass Camp, B.C. Stopping the violence must begin Dear Sir: I strongly agree that steps must be ‘taken to educate young males that vio- lence against women is unacceptable. I think that the education should begin at home. ; Parents should be teaching males good morals at an early age. The pareats also have an obligation to set an example. It is crucial, especially for the male, dad, boyfriend, etc. to stress equality and re- spect for women. By showing and ex- plaining this to their son it is teaching them one-on-one. Males at a young age have a tendency to pick up on their dad’s or male guar- dian’s actions. If violence is taking place at home in a household then the child will think it is all right. , Not only should. this be stressed and taught in school and society, there should be messages on commercials as well as on television shows and movies. In school they should teach kids to know what makes them angry and want to act irra- tionally. Then they should show them how to deal with it in a non-violent way. In society and at home, I believe that punishment for violence of any kind should be dealt with severely. This mes- Sage is nat spoken about. enough and should be taken seriously. -_ Tanya Alton, Terrace, B.C. large selection o Call us today, we can help you geton your way.
