Letters A pedestrian’ S view An open letter to Mayor Jack Taistra, There is no doubt in my mind that Terrace is one of the dirtiest centers in B.C. But a certain amount of clean up must be the responsibility of the City or we will ‘be known as the Garbage City of B.C. | At present I have a disability that I hope to overcome by go- ing for many walks. My next complaint is bicycle riding on the sidewalks by people of all ages. Some cyclists come upon one one from behind so quietly that one is not aware of their presence until they whizz by. I am not very swift on my feet at present, so I find it difficult to move out of their way when crowded. My hearing is good — but what about the very elderly? - I know several who walk uptown. from the Willows apartment block —- among them a couple in their nineties. It is not fair for them to have to be concerned about cyclists. Some age groups ride down the sidewalk side by side, come as close up to me as they dare to challenge me — then separate. Weather does not stop people from walking. It is very annoy- ing to have to duck under tree branches overhanging the sidewalks — especially dripping wet, I am five feet, six inches and have to duck. Try walking up Eby in the rain, for example, Another problem with our sidewalks is that water floods certain low areas, too deep to keep to the sidewalks. One good example is the sewer pump area on Sparks and Walsh. Last but not least — Are the sidewalks built for the conve- nience of some people to park their cars across them any time during the day or night? Perhaps you and some council members should try walking around Terrace, and then. you will find that my complaints are justified. . Thelma E.
