These prob- lems must be considered because they are basic in today’s situa- tion. : A tremendous propaganda campaign is taking place today: “Those who attack Israel seek to - commit genocide against the en- tire Jewish people.” “The Jew- ish people which has suffered so much throughout its history is again being persecuted.” “This is no longer a question of a piece of land. or a particular political regime—it iis a question of life and death for an entire people.” These are some of the expres- sions most frequently repeated by those who are anxious to con- fuse two distinct things — the State of Israel and the attitude of the world toward the Jewish people. They wish to underline the tragic past of the Jews, ex- piate (in part) the guilt com- plex toward this martyred part of humanity—but with a quite different purpose in mind. It might come as a surprise to certain people to note that the loudest expressions of profound sympathy for those who escaped death in the gas chambers come from those who, 30 years ago, were among the Jewish people’s worst persecutors and helped to augment anti-Semitism all over the world. We feel, however, that this is quite logical and we believe that. the, Jewish. ene da . which hasbeen the victim of Se Ehret lize this. fact. Certain people say. “The State of Israel is a reality that cannot be eliminated.” Of this there can be no doubt. We have af- firmed this concept in all our documents. Only a madman could speak seriously of cancel- ling Israel from the world map. But we say clearly to the world and among ourseives as Jews that this is not the real problem. The real problem is the kind of state and the future of this State of Israel. The original idea was and is that it must be the potential nation of the entire Jewish people, the final safe re- fuge after past tragedies and a protection from possible trage- dies in the future: a nation com- posed solely of Jews. This concept inevitably in- volves certain consequences which the Jewish people must understand and reject. There are about 13 million Jews in the world. To consider Israel as the possible “refuge” for these 13 million human beings—whether one likes it or not—inevitably leads to acceptance of a policy of expansion, annexation and aggression. Today’s frontier will not be sufficient tomorrow, when and if other millions: of Jews arrive from other lands, and then there will be new ag- gression to conquer new land. We already hear everywhere the statement that “Israel will never return to its 1948 bor- ders.” And this idea brings us to a racist-chauvinist concept of Is- rael. Recently on TV we heard Prime Minister Eshkol say, speaking of the Arab refugees: “They cannot return to their old lands. After all, they are better off among their own people of the same race and re- ligion.” Strange words indeed from a representative: of a people July 14, 1967—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 6 the worst racism. Italian Jews: You who have felt the brand of anti-Semitism on your own bodies, do you want a State founded on ra- cism? In the second place—and this in our opinion is the more im- portant—this concept of Israel as the proposed solution for the problems of all the Jewish population of the world serves to distract us from the heart of the question for those who really want equality and an end to dis- crimination, The struggle against racial persecution and chauvin- ism can have only one purpose: to ban any and all forms of dis- crimination in all countries and to establish equality and human rights for all peoples and groups, be they Jewish, yellow or black. The State of Israel must be protected and saved but only on condition that it change ‘its nature and become a state for all, including majority and min- ority ethnic groups. Such a state must renounce all policies of free and complete integra- tion, within its own borders, of Jews with people of other “races” and religions. To accept any other concept of the State of Israel is to march in the opposite direction and contrary to the real inter- ests of the Jewish people. It means giving a hand to those who have always supported ra- cial discrimination and chau- vinism. Why in this last period have the Jewish people received such unexpectedly warm _— support from the right and from the fas- cists? We continually hear this expression: “This people (the Jews) which has paid such a high price for survival certainly has the right today to a little peace and re- paration for its past suffering.” We would agree completely I’M TRAN VAN CHIEN.-: . +. ten years old, a second-form pal I live-in the workers’ living quarters of t evamelware factory and Binh Hail group of lodgings. This is the high-speed Soviet hydrofoil Raketa (rocket), which is docked in Expo’s Cité du Havre Exhibition Grounds. It will be on view at Expo for the remainder of the summer. Soviet trade authorities used the hydrofoil recently as the setting for a press conference at which they stressed their eager- ness to merchandise more Soviet goods in Canada. The Raketa itself is up for sale at a cost of about $150,000 (U.S.). The craft is an interme- diate-size hydrofoil seating 64 passengers and cruising at speeds of about 40 miles an hour. Some larger, sea-going - Soviet hydrofoils are capable of speeds up to 70 miles an hour. Several smaller hydrofoils have already kcen sold in the United States and Europe. Soviet trade officials plan to take the Raketa out on at least two excursions a week to enter- tain Canadian and foreign busi- nessmen or newsmen.
