It’s almost time for the Midsummer Festival, the always-anticipated and often soggy weekend gathering. The annual event, now celebrating its 19th year, brings together folkies fram across the northwest — and beyond — as live music fans and musi- cians descend upon the fall fair grounds in Smithers. The festival typically offers up some of the best up-and-comers the Cana- dian folk musie scene has to offer. With just a little more than one week to go before the June 21-23 festival gets underway, here’s a run- down of the headliners (Hint: you might want to bring your dancing shoes.) Terrace audiences will be familiar with B.C.’s own Bill Hilly Band, an acoustic sound explosion that promises to get the crowd on its feet. The energetic, five-man ensemble daz- zled audiences here last foll, when the band appeared at the R.E.M. Lee as part of the Terrace Concert Society’s 2002-03 season. Their music combines rock, jazz, clas- sical and North American folk traditions from both coasts. The Buttless Chaps also sound like a lot of fun. This Vancouver-based foursome ad- mits a fondness for country music — make that o/fd country music, like the kind man in black Johnny Cash rumbles — and 1980s Euro-synth bands like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode.
