Actually, Terrace’s — _Joan Flaherty is becoming a star in her own ight, as one of five hockey moms in a new Bell Canada com- mercial. A few weeks ago Joan received a phone call from a representative from Bell Canada in Toronto, He told her that she and five other goalie moms were selected from a group of 40 to go to Toronto and make a commercial, ‘At Girst I thought, no that’s not really for me, but then I changed my mind,"’ says Joan Flaherty. The hockey moms ad also fea- tures the mothers of Canuck Kirk McLean, the Flames’ Trevor Kidd, Detroit’s Chris Osgood and Washington’s Olaf Kolzig. The commercial was shot in St. Michacl’s Arena, the training ground of many Toronto Maple Leaf Legends. Joan went through the typical preparations — a hair appoint- ment and the struggle of deciding what to wear. The wardrobe manager advised her to pick out three different out- fits from her closet, but Joan de- cided to buy a new outfit as well. In the end however, all the hockey moms ended up wearing goalie pads and shirts, so clothing ‘wasn’t even an issue. The next morning Joan left for Toronto, arriving there at 9 p.m. She was booked at the Westin Harbour Castle, along with the other mothers. The women had never met be- fore and got acquainted over din- ner, The next day they got up early, and were chauffeured to the St Michael Arena for the casting of the commercial. There was no script; the direc- tor merely asked them to talk about their sons, and calling long distance to theirsons. = Because most of the moms weren't able to skate they all wore runiting shoes on the ice. “We had a blast,’ says Flaherty.
