On Saturday afternoon, Jane was pampered with a new hairdo courtesy of Continental Coif- fures, Central Flowers provided a corsage for Jane, a boutonnier for Peter and flowers and cham- pagne in their hotel suite. They were treated to a chauffeur- driven limosine tour of Terrace on Saturday evening, courtesy of Terrace Totem Ford, a candlelit dinner, compliments of Manuel’s Restuarant, and a night at the Desiderata Inn, in the Lava Suite. On Valentines Day, the Kinet- tes, with the assistance of the Kinsmen, hosted their annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance at Play shows local students destructive effects of drug abuse on families TERRACE — Two perform- — ances by the Pacific Theatre Company of Richmond have left a lasting impression with many Terrace students. “I Am_ the Brother of Dragons’’ and ‘‘Say No Max’’, both written by Gilletee Elvgrin of the Pacific Salt Company, a theatre com- pany in Pittsburgh, Pa., deal with issues like substance abuse and peer pressure in such a way that many viewers are heard say- ing, “I was in that play’’, following the performance. by Tod Strachan ‘Tt Am the Brother of Dragons’’ is directed at teenagers and their parents and tells the story of a family pushed to the breaking point by their son’s problem with alcohol and drugs. . Billed as hopeful but not unrealistic, the play has much to say about family relationships through the use of masks, game- show parodies and rock video and vaudeville-styled segments which create a powerful impres- sion on the viewer. The second play, ‘‘Say No Max’’, was written for parents and students at the elementary level’ and describes a day in the life of an imaginative 10-year- old who has just moved from Saskatchewan to B.C. In the play, Max is confronted with peer pressure and will do -.almost anything to “‘fit in” -with his peers. During the perform- nce, the audience travels with Max to the imaginary ‘“‘Land of Delusion’? where they learn how to make their own decisions about drugs and alcohol, Added interest is skillfully created by getting the audience to par- ticipate in songs, follow-the- leader, mirror games and by _ helping Max to make various decisions. Lezlie Wade, the 25-year-old actress who played various characters in the two plays, said |, “Say No Max” and “I Am the Brother of Dragons’ are the first shows of any social significance that the. Richmond- based company has toured in its three-year history. To this point, she said, the response to their message has been encouraging. Wade said-the value of com- munication and deciding who’s to blame are the prime lessons to be learned from ‘EF Am the Brother of Dragons’’. Valuable lessons, she said, even for teens who don’t have the tragedy of chemical dependency in their lives, because the solution to most family problems can be found through communication. | - *£1t?s important that you keep those communication lines open,”’ she advised, ‘‘And if you can’t talk to your parents, you have to talk to your friends or teachers or someone you. can trust.”” . And who’s to blame when there is a problem? ‘‘Everyone,’’ according to Wade. The person with the drug problem is the primary figure and must carry a good deal of the blame for his (or her) actions and the resulting stress placed on the family, ‘“You take the drug — you choose or don’t choose to use drugs or alcohol — and it’s your choice. And it’s up to you to do something about it,” Wade said, However, she added, everyone who is aware of the problem and says nothing. must also carry a part of the blame. She explained that although the City of Terrace Family Court and friends or family of the person with a drug dependency could do noting to solve his dependen- cy problem, it. is everyone’s responsibility to deal with the problems caused by the resulting stress and most often the even- tual breakdown of the family unit. And that can only be done by communication. ‘‘Rveryone is.responsible — ‘parents, brothers, - sisters, teachers — everyone,’? Wade stressed. ‘And you've got to talk. Talking is absolutely imperative.”” .Wade said the second play, “Say No Max”, is primarily about peer pressure and how it relates to things such as drugs, alcohol, smoking and stealing. ‘Peer pressure is very important in this play,’? Wade said, “Showing how kids bully kids into doing things. Kids who want to belong so badly.” ‘*By the time kids are 12 years old they’ve pretty much made up their minds as to what they’re going to do, and they already have people that they look up to who set examples for them,” she explained. ‘‘So this play is most- ly to just sort of clarify things for them. To make them realize that they can say ‘no’ and there’s nothing weak about it.
