It is a struggle for human rights and social justice. The British Colum- bia Federation of Labor will not let these farm workers down in their time of need, and calls on all Federation affiliates not to handle any ‘hot’ California or Arizona grapes.” The repudiation by Premier Dave Barrett of an earlier stand by Health Minister Dennis Cocke, that hospitals should not buy Cali- fornia grapes, was a before the pressure of right wing editorial writers in the media, and pressure from Ed Lawson of the Teamsters. A Tribute paid to Anna Holyk The Ukrainian Cultural Centre was filled to overflowing at the final tribute to Anna Holyk, veteran Ukrainian and peace ac- tivist, and member of the Com- munist Party since 1936. One of a family of 15 children, born in Permilow in the oblast of Tarnople, in 1900 she migrated to Canada in 1928, where she im- mediately became an active member in the Ukrainian Labor Farmer Temple Association. In 1930 she met and married Peter Holyk. After he was forced to aban- don working underground at Britannia Mine, they went to Camp 6 Youbou. In 1936 Anna joined the Com- munist Party of which she was an active member until sickness forc- ed her to relinquish respon- sibilities. She was a member for eight years of the B.C. Provincial Executive of the Association of Ukrainian Canadians, a delegate to the first World Peace Congress in Helsinki where the Stockholm Peace Petition was launched. For over forty-three years there were few activities in the labor and progressive movement of British Columbia that were not the beneficiaries of her generosity and active support. Tributes were delivered at the funeral on December 3 in Van- couver by Mrs. Hannah Polowy and Mrs. Nickotiuk of the Women’s Branch of the AUUC; John Chitrenky of the Provincial Council of the AUUC; Walter Gawryski of the Federation of Russian Canadians and Nigel Morgan, Provincial leader of the Com- munist Party.
