B12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 22, 1998 Bikers blast records at Shames hill climb AN EARLY spring helped mountain bikers blow away last year’s record at the annual Shames Mtn, Climb and Crash last week. With the ski facililics long since shut down, organizers opted to make this year’s event just a climb, Organizer and racer Mike Christensen says that probably helped racers focus on the climb, and climb they did up the gruel- ing, steep mountain road. ‘'Road conditions this year were just per- fect,’’ Christensen says. ‘‘They were really primo.” , A total of 16 racers turned out for the event, which pleased Christensen because the date had been changed and was being held on a Monday, when lots of people had to work, Competition at this year’s climb was in- tensc, with just over 10 minutes separating the top 10 racers, and three minutes separating the top four. The race got off to a fast start. Then about five kilometres in, Adam Spensley and Brandon Smoley broke free from the pack. Christensen says the race stayed that way “until the last switchback, when Spensley pulled away and broke the previous record by more than three minutes, at 41:30. *‘The fitness of the riders this spring is quite a bit higher than in the past,’ Christensen says, ‘‘I think that says a lot about what this season will be like.’’ Christensen says the early spring has given riders more opportunity to train, and he points out that many of Ihe young riders are now starting to come into their own. "Last year was the first year for a lot of racers to get a taste of what racing’s all about,’’ he says. “Now they’ve been train- ing hard all winter and doing more riding.” That enthusiasm and better conditioning really showed in the times. Christensen ac- tually rode faster than his record-breaking time last year, but he slill finished fourth. “The competition for the Summer Games will be really intense this year,’’ he says. ‘*We have a lot of good riders.’’ Brandon Smoley is one of those riders, He finished second, just 11 seconds behind Spensley, Kyle Mason was third, three minutes bebind the leaders. He was fol- lowed by Mike Christensen at 44:51, who finished first in the Senior category, Andrew Horwood of Kitimat was the first out-of-own competitor to cross the line. He finished fifth, Jeff Meeks of Terrace was sixth, The first truly off-road race of the sum- mer, the Kona Red Sands Root Shoot, is . coming up May 18 just uorth of Terrace. It’s also the first BC Summer Games try- out race of the year. Flaherty nets shutout TERRACE’S TOP goal- tender eared a shutout last week for the New York Is- landers. Loggers spiel draws 42 rinks SMITHERS RINKS were some of the top contenders at the popular Men’s Loggers Bonspiel. Curlers from the littie Bavarian town took first-place in two of the four evenis. More than 40 rinks took part in this year’s spiel, held two weekends ago at the curling club. It was the last major curling event of the season aj the club. Smithers curlers dominated the A Event, with the Rob Brise rink and the Glen Baker rink taking first and second spots respectively, Terrace rinks were shut out of the top A Event spots. But Terrace dominated the B Event. The Duane Melanson rink won that one, with second spot going to W. Obre of Houston, third to the Ken Hendry rink of Terrace and fourth to Terrace’s Shane Norum rink, Kitimat took top spol in the C Event, thanks to a great performance by the G. Habinger rink. Terrace’s Dale Walker, Rob Findlay and George Kozak rinks took second through fourth. Floor hockey league deadline extended THE DEADLINE for entering the OPOV floor hockey league has been extended. It seems a few teams have been a little slow in ponying up the dough for registration, so there may be room for other teams, Organizer Devon Kuiper says teams now have until Apr. 23 to register. League games should start on Apr. 27 and are tentatively set to take place at the Thombill Com- munity Centre on Mondays and Thursdays. For mare information, call Devon at 638-0188. After the game and the 4-0 win, Flaherty saluted the cheering crowd and players gave away their sticks to Flaherty was also named Player of the Game for the second straight time against The win gave him a record of 4-4-3 for the season. Flaberty’s brother Brent says the Islanders will have to take a good long look at Wade and figure oul what they are going to do with him. “He's surprised a lot of people and played really, teally well,’’ he says. bidding process.
