RCMP raid in Stewart

A team of 10 RCMP officers
_ swept through the port community
of Stewart Dec. 11, raiding about
20 households and seizing an
assortment of unregistered guns.
Cpt. Dave Beach, who works for
the RCMP’s customs and excise
branch in Prince Rupert,
coordinated the raid. He said the

Alaska, the isolated Alaskan town
that is accessible only through
Stewart.

Stewart mayor Darlene Cornell
blames the federal government’s

“move years ago that removed the

customs service between Stewart

and Hyder, effectively creating an
open border between the two com-
munities. "Word of honour doesn’t
seem to work," she remarked.

Comell said Stewart has lobbied
persistently for reinstatement of the
border station, but she’s been ‘told

point-blank the town won't ae it.

It was removed as a federal cost-
cutting measure.

But the RCMP raid serves to.
illustrate that removing the cus-

' toms service makes more work for

the police, Cornell said.."It takes
them away from their regular
duties."
