- Local project helps _ Romanian orphans . Last Tuesday saw a number of Terrace -women, sewing stuffed hearis. for orphans’ in Romania... Organizer Laurie Mitchell is ex-. cited by the prospect of raising Money and. at the same time,. sending loys to these children, some of whom have never before seen a toy. ' The felt hearts, stuffed with fibrefil, and decorated with bows . and bells, were sold last weekend in the Skeena Mall. And, will be on sale again the weekend of March 10th, But, rather than tak- ing the toy home, the buyers are asked to sign a card printed with the words "From Canada with love", donate $5.00 arid have each heart sent to an orphan in Roma- nia. The thousands of Romanian orphans in state orphanages in Romania are the result of Nicolae Ceausescu, dictator, instigating a forced breeding program. He barred women in Romania from using birth contro! until after their fifth live birth. Many of the un- wanted, diseased or troubled chil- dren ended up in state or- phanages. Romanian orphans, abandoned by parents who could not afford to feed them, have been living” in ‘deplorable or- phanages since birth, The autrocit- ies of his rule were discovered by the outside world after the Decem- ber 25, 1989 execution of Ceau- - sescu and his wife. Half of the money raised by selling the felt hearts, less expen- ses, will be used locally for legal fees and other expenses incurred by people travelling to Romania, in hopes of adopting a Romanian orphan. The other half of the money raised will. be sent to B.C.’*s ROMANIAN ORPHANS SUPPORT GROUP in Langley. Core committee member, Sonya Patterson, and her group there have been most helpful, according to Laurie Mitchell, - Tt is the intention of the Roma- _ fiian Orphans’ Support Group to send a fact-finding team to Roma- nia to. assess the situation and deliver medical supplies. The team of five to seven peo- ple includes doctors. They will meet with government officials and orphanage administrators in the hopes of assisting Romania in easing this crisis situation. And to assess the possibility of some of these children being adopted by Canadian parents. In the first week of 1990, eight hundred children ranging from newborn to age three were coun- ted at Orphanage Number One, one of the thousands of state-run - orphanages in Romania. Presently, the staffforphan ratio is as high as - one staff member to thirty or- phans. | Throughout B.C.s northwest, from Houston to the Queen Char- lotte Islands, more than seventy couples have formed a Romanian Orphans support group. Not all these couples want to adopt a child. Some just want to help, from a distance. . The children available for adop- tion have rickets, low grade infec- tions, psychological delay caused by neglect, and a smal! percentage do have AIDS. Due to lack of funds, and un- trained staff caring for the or- phans, some have acquired AIDS through the sharing of unsterilized hypodermic syringes. But, if it is: determined that Canadians can adopt the Romanian babies, Cana- dian immigration regulations’ will . Terrace Review — Wednesday, February 28, 1990 A15 restrict any AIDS baby from - entering Canada, according to Laurie Mitchell, local ‘Spokesper- son. ‘The Romanian eriibassy ‘has recently issued an: informal. set of - _ guidelines for adopting Romanian ‘babies, but no definite policies have yet been set. If it is not. ‘possible for Canadians to. adopt from. Romania, the money will still be sent for medical supplies and improved care for the orphans Fay in Romania. Its purpose is to allow vehicle at the Thornhill dump. The theft of a 1989 Cavalier four-door sedan last weekend from the B.C. Telephone compound on Park Ave. has prompted increased security at the company’s Terrace headquarters. B.C. Telephone district customer service manager Brooke Hodgson Says the theft occured sometime on Feb. 18 and the vehicle was discovered three days later at the Thornhill garbage dump. It had been destroyed by fire and the loss has been estimated at $12,000. According to Hodgson, ‘vandal- ism at the B.C. Telephone com- pound is nothing new but they ‘hope the increased security will solve their problem, a problem they’ve had for the past five years. About a year and a half ago, for example, someone broke into the compound and tried burning vehicles by lighting “wicks” inserted in gas. tank filler spouts. The only damage caused by this act was melted plastic filler spouts, -but Hodgson says it was a sense- less act and it was only a matter of luck that the vandal or vandals weren’t killed or injured. In this most recent incident, Hodgson says, a person or persons entered the locked compound, broke into two vehicles, stole an axe from one and destroyed a "lock box" to obtain the keys to a third vehicle. He explains that a lock box is a master-keyed storage box attached to B.C. Telephone IRatever You wear, ™ ‘clean with care / WEDNESDAY IS.
