But do we clean it right? (Especially when we get to the gas burner itself.) Turn your burners on full blast. and look at the flame! Is it uniform? Are any of the flames higher than the others? Are some smaller when you turn the gas on medium? ~ Tf so, turn the gas off, and when the burners are cool, remove them from your stove (bet it’s been a long time since you've done anything like that, eh?) and let's get ‘em going correctly. First, they must be scrubbed and cleaned good. Then use a toothpick (I use the Icepick whena toothpick is too thin) and push it in eack little hole. This will clean out the burned food stuff that has boiled over and ‘tepoked”’ into the hole itself. YOU are going to have a mighty big surprise... Let dry thoroughly. (If you have a dishwasher, run the whole kaboadle through the entire cycle.) I find it dries better that way and also gets more gook off. Replace the “plate” and turn ou burners again. Test at both full blast and on medium, and then simmer. Your burner should work as if it were a new stove. lf you see any flames not working properly, use that icepick once again. The burner will not have to be removed todo this, but Heaven- help-a-duck be sure to turn off the flame before sticking your hand in it. But then we've ail been burned once before and know how to keep our hands out of flames. Eh, what? love — Heloise * * HINTS FROM HIM _ DEAR HELOISE:, I bought a pair of scissors some years ago only to have them come unscrewed, and when the screw was tightened it would not stay. So the other day I got the idea to put a couple drops of super glue on the thread end and let dry, Works like a charm. Be sure the screw is tightened to where the scissors cut the way you want them to before putting on the glue. A ‘‘Like- new” pair of scissors! — Paul E. Smith + ¢ DEAR HELOISE: My hint, which my husband taught me, will save lots of WOITy. When closing your nail polish bottle or glue, etc. give it two or three turns around (just ¢ill it stops —not that “extra twist”), and it will never stick; therefore, will open easily next time. Just try it! — Claudine Monroe * * &@ DEAR HELOISE: For all of us who wear rubber gloves for washing dishes: before putting on gloves, apply a generous portion of hand lotion (even petroleum jelly), then wash dishes. The heat from the dishwater opens your pores and you ab- sorb all the lotion, Quick and easy way to soften dry hands, — Debbie a DEAR HELOISE: After years of cooking for a family, now that I'm living alone, cooking for one became a problem. I used to freeze leftovers in TV dinner trays for future meals, Now I just grease the tray compartments with margarine, add a chop, small steak or piece of chicken, canned frozen or fresh potatoes and choice of vegetables, season and dot with margarine. I have already set my litile toaster-broiler oven to 425 degrees, so plop my dinner in and sitand unwind with a cup of coffee while catching the newscast on TV. Depending on entree, it is usually ready in 30 to 45 minntes (no turning or basting necessary). If I think the vegetables might overbrown or dry oul, I cut another tray into sections and invert over the corresponding bottom section with a tablespoon or two of liquid added. hee After a tiring day at the office this Is simple as well as nutritional. Easy on the dish- washing, too! I cook and serve in the same tray and they are reusable. —,&.
