March 15th, 1976 serve stations is that they want complete control over marketing their products — which is just one more way of dramatically increasing the price of their products. Moved by Alderman Mabbett: Seconded by Alderman Traboulay: That as recommended in a report from Alderman E.W. Mabbett, March 9th, 1976, the Council of the City of Port Coquitlam set a limit on the number of self-serve gas stations in the City and that the limit be not more than 20% of the total number of gas station outlets in Port Coquitlam. Tabled. In speaking to the report, Alderman Keryluk complimented Alderman Mabbett for introducing this very timely topic; however, with respect to loss of employment, he stated he felt those persons so affected would be taken in by other service stations and, further, in regard to loss of apprenticeship programmes for mechanics, he had ascertained that the larger dealerships do offer such programmes. Alderman Keryluk also ae pointed out that rather than increasing profits for the oil companies, self-serve stations should work to an advantage in keeping costs down by cutting out the "middle man"; however, Aidernman Traboulay stated he felt that the oii companies have contributed to a great extent in bringing about the present escalation of prices. Alderman Thompson stated he felt that this is again a case of Government interfering where it should not and Alderman Mabbett suggested that perhaps the operators in the City should be contacted and s-equested to give their opinions as to how they would feel about regulations being imposed, Moved by Alderman Thompson: Seconced by Alderman Laking: That in order to obtain a concensus of opinion from the service station operators in the City, the foregoing proposed resolution to limit the number of self-service gas stations in Port Coquitlam be tabled for one week. Carried. Aldermen Ranger and Keryluk voted against the resolution. Prior to passage of the foregoing resolution, Alderman Traboulay stated he felt that public participation should also be invited and Alderman Mabbett advised he would have no objection to the material being made available to the local ratepayers groups as well as to the operators of service stations.
