It’s bear season again sO mind your garbage RECENT BEAR sightings in and around the city have provincial conservation of- ficers once again telling people to: keep their eyes peeled. ' “It’s a- fairly common thing,” said Terrace Con- servation Officer Blair Thin, adding that there are lots of fruit trees, berry bushes, composts and bird feeders in the area that attract bears. An unknown citizen re- cently tacked up a ‘beware ‘of bear’ sign to a'tree at the base of Lanfear ‘Hill right | where there’s an entrance to the Howe Creek trail sys- tem. _ A black bear was sighted. on the hill of Lanfear Drive July 18, and another. mother ‘and cub were spotted feed- ing on fruit on’McConnell Avenue July 7. Bears have been known: to frequent Lanfear hill area, but there has been no. ag- gressive reported behaviour __ so far. _ The conservation office takes note of bear sightings, but won’t take action unless . the bears start to do dam- age. . , “The bear has to be ex- hibiting non-natural behav- iour to become a candidate for, destruction,” said Thin. “According to the con- servation office, unsecure garbage cans and contain- ers top the list of why bears have to be destroyed. “Once a-bear comes to rely on garbage and° other unnatural food sources, it loses’. its: fear of humans” and can quickly become a risk to public safety,” Thin said. “Often-the only practi- cal solution is to-kill them. - Relocation .is dangerous, ". expensive, and often unsuc- cessful.” - The public can do its part. to reduce bear/human con- © flict by keeping garbage, ‘compost, and bird feed: Out oe rcach'of'béars: an) ae "Garbage cans should be ‘stored inside a secured area until garbage day, and the © cans should be cleaned reg- ularly, Log work results ina fine A LOCAL man has been fined $20,000 for removing logs from a log jam on the Kemano River and compro- mising .fish habitat in the process. oo ’. Jerrad Zuchotski, a log salvager who works in Ke- mano, plead guilty to one count of fish habitat destruc- ‘tion in Terrace court July 26. : The removal of the logs ‘dates’ back to November _.2001 when the: Department ‘of Fisheries and Oceans was ,advised of his actions. : Zuchotski painted — the ‘ends of the freshly cut logs 'to conceal his activity, say ,DFO officials. : A joint investigation by ‘DFO and by the provincial. - ‘forests ministry -revealed: nine large Sitka spruce logs ‘had been removed from a ‘log jam in the Kemano Riv- ‘er, and were bundled up at ‘the mouth of the river. ' The logs. were estimated ‘to be worth $15,000. ’ During the investigation samples were cut from the ‘logs and from the stumps _‘and tops of trees from the ‘Kemano River by forestry . Staff. The sampling was done in. an attempt to match the ‘samples from the Kemano ‘River to those logs that were ‘taken by Mr. Zuchotski, of- ‘ficials say: | 7 The samples were sent to THAT’S CONSERVATION officer Blair Thin with one of the cylinder traps used to snare problem bears. Other attractants such as. ‘food on barbecues, pet food and coolers with food and fish smells should not be left about. Simple things like pick- ing fruit off fruit trees daily will also prevent bears from coming around. “If they’re no attractants in the area, the bears leave,” Thin said. | — Two ‘bears have been de- stroyed. in the Terrace area since May. . - Thin destroyed an imma- ture male. black bear at an illegal dumping site on the West Kalum Forest Service - Road June 9 because it was ~ used to eating garbage. _ The public is advised ‘to use the area’s waste landfills to dispose their garbage, as . ‘illegal dumping will possi- . bly attract bears. . “B.C. - Park Services trapped and destroyed a two- year-old black bear at Lake- Ise Lake Provincial Park at the end of May. because the bear was becoming bold and . going into camps to look for food.. ~ “Every complaint we get. -we have to assess what the bear’s doing,” Thin said. » There were’ 135. bear complaints and four bears destroyed in June 2003 com- pared to 101 complaints and five bears destroyed in the Terrace area last June. The number of: com- ° plaints has dropped drasti-° cally this June, with only 21 complaints. . Thin said the number of bear sightings are sig- nificantly lower this: year, and attributes some of the decrease ‘to this. summer’s weather andfood availabil- ily. Drier summers tend to kill off the mountain berries. faster, and so the bears move down the valley to get food.. This summer has been much — wetter than last year. However, the closure of the conservation office to the public last year may be deterring people from, re-— porting sightings. . If there is a bear in the neighbourhood, remain calm; the bear is simply looking for food and wiil | move on if it finds nothing ‘toeat. | Stay away from the bear _and if possible advise neigh- -bours to stay indoors.°If the bear is threatening, persis- tent or aggressive, call the ' Conservation Officer. Ser- . vice and describe the behav- iour. People are encouraged to call the Conservation Offi- cer Service 24-hour provin- cial call centre at 1-877-952- 7277 for bear sightings, or any other wildlife that pose a risk to human safety or pri- vate property., ° ~ PRICING: ‘NOW UNTIL AUGUST 31", YOU'LL GET OUR EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT PRICING ON MOST NEW IN-STOCK 2005 FORD.
