Garbage problem persists Fast foods, students es main culprits in Eby St. tt ' trail of garbage” THE TRAIL of garbage between local high schools and downtown fast-food eateries has one local woman disgusted and asking council to do something about it. Lois Hlushak, a Tuck Ave. resident, told city councillors last week she wants someone to force local students to clean up their act. “Nobody is enforcing the bylaws here,” she told them Sept. 25. “Lf we’re not going to give them a fine, at least make them pick it up.” The situation has gotten much worse in the last three years, she added. *[ would really like ta see something done,” she said. The mayor said he notices a lot of litter near his downtown law office building. “You can follow the litter from McDonalds and A&W all the way to school,” Jack Talstra said. Talstra also said local fast food cateries used to send their workers out and pick up garbage within a certain distance of their rest- aurants. “That seems to have fallen by the wayside,” he said. Councillor David Hull noted the litter doesn’t ali come from local students. But he said the concentration of garbage around local schools amounts to “a bit of a pattern here.” “I’m not sure why our city strects and school grounds have to look like pig stys,” he said. Hlushak says she’s talked to the city, Cale- donia schooi and even the police about the problem, which includes shopping buggies being dumped along the side of Eby St. LOIS HLUSHAK hasn't seen any steady improvement in neighbourhood garbage cleanup by the city or local kids. She brought her concerns before council last week. This is some of the mess teft behind at an empty lot near Park Ave. and Eby St. Bes iar = The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 4, 2000 - A3 News In Brief “Same area, . Noone seems to want to take responsibility for the mess, she said. “They’re all passing the buck.” Councillor Olga Power noted there are no garbage receptacles along Eby St. north of city hall. “Somewhere along the way we’ve got to have receptacles,” she said. “Homeowners like Lois are constantly picking up after these people.” Hiushak says more emphasis should be placed on the kids themselves to pick up the garbage and that the city should enforce the by-laws more. “Everyone’s scared to discipline these kids,” she said. “They should put a sign there that says ‘No littering or you'll be prosecu- ted.’” Council agreed to put the litter issue on the agenda for its annual think-tank session early next year.
