Log sellers turned down in Thornhill THE REGIONAL District of Kitimat Stikine’s decision not to allow a log sort yard in Copperside Estales means a local lumber company is on the hunt for another suitable loca- tion. “We've been here for years and we’re going to be here for years,” said K'shian Logging and Construction Ltd. spokesperson Dave Parker. “We’|| just work it out.” Regional district directors yoted to deny K’shiay appro- val for industrial zoning in the area after 24 residents turned up to protest the development at an Oct. 20 public hearing, K'shian Construction owners Frank and Cathy Cutler wanted to establish a “log supermarket” at the site housing a wide variety of logs from saw logs to veneer logs and poles. “If you need a log it’s basically where you’d go,” said Parker. They thought the Copperside site was perfect because of it’s large size, flat landscape and highway access. K’shian originally looked at property at the Terrace- Ki- timat airport ~ but that Jand wouldn't be available for an- other two to five years, said Parker, Construction at the Copperside site would have started early next spring. The yard would be used to sort and store logs for local, off-shore and domestic clients and would employ 12 full time employees. - The move to keep area zoning rural residential pleased area residents who had planned on leaving if the proposal went through. “If we wanted to live next to a sawmill or log sort opera- tion, we would have bought in town,” said Maurie Hurst whose family bought property immediately north of the site a year ago. - “We bought the house with the intent of growing ald here,” she said. “This changes everything.” Hurst said she didn’t believe an environmental consul- tant’s report alleging area well water would be largely un- affected by the log sort. And, she said, logging is a dirty, noisy business, that would be taking place directly above her family’s property. K’shian expected up to 35 logging tmcks to travel daily down a nearby access road, as well as operating loaders, chain saws and heavy equipment at the site, Hazelton director Alice Maitland said the board suppar- ted the log sort yard in principle — it just wanted owners to find a more suitable localion. “The board voted to work with K’shian Construction in, finding a more appropriate site in the Terrace area. Dum THE CITY of Terrace still doesn’t know if it will chip -in for a super-dump at Onion Lake or vote in fa- vour of expanding the Thornhill landfill. The decision was to have been made al an Oct, 22 meeting with the regio- na! district ; The cily asked to have the issue tabled (o the next board meeting, giving councillors an extra manth to review and firm up fig- ures Their final decision would come down Nov, 26- 27 — the week after muni- cipal and district elections. The city has to close ils own dump soon because of environmental reasons and has been looking for an al- ternate location. Mayor Jack Taistra says the cosis of building at Onton Lake seem prohibi- tive and he doesn’! neces- sarily believe a Thornhill expansion will need the Sle environmental protection consultants predict. Onion Lake is estima- ted to cost $10. more per Square fonne of garbage than Thornhill, And when a year's garbage is collected that amount could cost $100,000. “It's a lot of money for us,” said Talstra, Those figures assume Thornhill doesn’t need a serics of aerated lagoons and ponds to treat site run off ~ an added expense of “$5 to $10. per square tone. _ Environmental proatec- tion includes water treat- ment for possible heavy metals, ammonia and dis- posable organics icaking into Thornhill Creek and area wetlands. All estimates are based ‘ on 47-year lifelime and 865-tanne capacity of the Thornhill site. Hs directors voted for Sale On Until November 6, 1999 year-old home betonging to Darren Thomp- main in a rural residential area after the re- Pp decision put off Onion Lake site, Thornhill residents would get and pay for regularly scheduled pick up, comparable to what Terrace residents re- ceive now. But 4 bare-bones trans- fer station would possibly be set up in Thornhill and Lakelse. Lake so local te- sident would have a near- by drop off for extra garb- age, That would eliminate extra traffic between here and Onion Lake, but would add to total cost of the new site, The city is also facing pressure to chip in for some of the initial consul- tant cosls and surveys al- ready being spent on the project. “It's time to get the municipalities involved,” said Hazelton director Peter Weeber. “There’s big dollars being spen here.” .
