All parents of Skeena Jr,
Secondary School students
are invited to atiend a meet-
ing on Tuesday, April 30 at
7:30 p.m. about the school's
accreditation.
-Skeena Jr has been going
through the accreditation
process this school year, and
as part of that process, an
extemal team of educators
will be al the school that day
to talk to parents,

The meeting will be held |

in the school library and
will be chaired by parent
members of Skeena’s- inter-
nal accredilation team.

If parents wish to mect in-
dividually with a member of
the external team during the
weck of April 29-May 3,
they can call the school to
arrange an appointment,

Socicty is inviting all high
schoo! and elementary
school students in the area

to take part in an essay con-—

lest.

Students in elementary
school] are being asked to
write an essay of 100 wards
or fess, saying how they
would help end poverty.
First prize nets the winner a
$50 pill certificate; second
prize is worth $30 while the
third place winner gets a
$15 gift certificate.

Al the high school level,
students are invited to wrile
an essay 3500 words or less
about “ways in which to al-
leviate poverty.’ Prizes at
this age level are the same
as above.

Deadline for both essay
contests is May 31. prizes
will be awarded June 21.

KATRINA BECKWITH
may be Terace’s youngest
composer,

The grade-two ET Kenney
student just had her song
performed at the Pacific
NW Music Festival. The ad-
judicator was so impressed
he had her take a bow.

Beckwith's song first be-
gan asa poem she wrote this
Christmas about the music
animals make,

“It was so great,’’ says
her music teacher Sandra
Konkin, “The poem was
meant to be sung.’?

So Konkin turned the
pocm into a music project in
which the whole class could
participate,

She wrote the words of
Beckwith’s poem onto chart
paper and the class decided
where the beats should go
and the rhythm of: the
words. Then they put in the
high and low parts, symbols,
and they were able to con-
vert the poem into a song.

“Then we took it all the
way io the music festival.”

The children made special
masks for the performance
and took the parts of crick-
els, cals, and birds.

Beckwith was excited
about the way the per-
formance went, demonstrat-
ing how the cricket rubbed
its legs, and how the cats
stepped softly.

Writing the poem wasnt
that hard, she said,

Is it a REAL Medical Emergency?

Use Your Emergency Department Wisely.
Your hospital EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT is organized for suddan, serious
health problems. The hospital has a fixed budget, however, and unnecessary
use of the emergency department diverts resources from other areas of the
hospital. The same service provided in the doctor's office is much cheaper
than if provided in the Emergency Department. It should not be used as a
substitute for visits to your doctar’s office.

- Doctors’ Office Versus Emergency Visit
If you have an ongcing medical problem that has not suddenly affected your
well being, you should arrange to see your doctar in the office. If you are
seriously injured or are suddenly taken ill, the EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
is where you belong.

What If You Don’t Have a Doctor?
Plan to have a family doctor before an emergency occurs, Family doctors’
office number in Terrace are listed in the Yellow Pages of your telephone
directory under “Physicians & Surgeons.” The EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT
staff cannot recommend the name of a coctar to choose.

When It Really fs An Emergency

When you have a real emergency, bring the patient to the EMERGENCY
DEPARTMENT, promptly, using ambulance services if necessary. Emergency
room nurses are also not allowed to give medical advice over the phone.
EMERGENCY patients are assessed on arrival and those with serious
and/or life threatening problems are seen first. The hospital does not have
on site emergency physicians. In a real emergency “on-cail’ doctors are
available.
