Safe drivers rewarded

Safe drivers should expect some
good news in next year’s insur-
ance package from ICBC.

The benefits would probably
won't come in the form of lower
premiums, however. With $1.7
billion in claims expected in the
coming year the corporation
doesn’! have the leeway to offer
lower premiums, Hardie said.

Of every dollar ICBC takes in,
it pays 90 cents in settlements and
other benefits for claims. That

leaves only 10 cents on the dollar

— plus what the corporation can
make on various investments —

And there are more than one
million safe drivers in the pro-
vines, :

“What that says is we obvicus-
ly don’t have a lot of latitude to
put money from one hand into ari-
other,”’ Hardie said. ;

“The only thing that’s going to
bring (premium) rates down is a
drop in claims,”’

specifics because any announce-
ment must be approved by
ICBC’s board of directors, As
