Dri. David Bowering has said he'll resign if he isn’t also nam- ed the umit’s director, ‘Speaking last week, health unit chairman John LeSage said he wants to meet with Bowering as soon as possible. It*ll_be the first time LeSage and Bowering. will. have. met since the latter submitted a resignation letter the end of February. The. situation arose at the board’s Feb. 24 meeting when it refused to go along with the provincial government's ap- pointment of Bowering as the unit’s director. That appcint- ment occurred in January when then-director Mike Corbeil was Te-assigned. by the health ministry, Instead,.the board agreed to only name Bowering as interim director until another one could be hired. At issue are the powers of the board and of the health ministry in the administration of the health. unit. Although medical health officers report to the board, the unit’s director is ap- pointed by the health ministry. Bowering *s appointment as director by the provincial government follows the Practice of other health units in which the posi- _ tions are combined. The province: created a Separate director’s position in ‘this and other health units three ‘years ago to keep managerial continuity owing to the difficul- ty of finding and keeping medical health officers. Speaking last week, LeSage said he remains convinced that - one person can't do both jobs owing to the demands of the 7 positions and..the. geographic size of the unit. For his part, Bowering says. having a director and a medical health officer wasn’t working as it made communications and overall management’ of the unit difficutt a “I want to talk to him (Bowering) as soon as possible,’ said LeSage in ad- ding he has spoken with the three other people who make up the executive of the health unit. They discussed four pro- posalg submitted by Bowering 10 days ago as possible solu- tions to the situation. One compromise possible may involve having the unit's administrative officer assume — more. of the managerial work, said LeSage. He added that the board has yet to hear from the provincial government since it sent a letter asking that a separate director be hired. yy a The Terrace Hotel Sunday Evening 24 feet of hot & cold choices’ ” Reservations recommended 635-6630 Michael Homunick Danny Homunick Carriers of the Year!
