In the first race at White Rock (the criterium), Mike stayed with the pack on a so-so effort. Next was the time trial where he timed out poorly to wind up about 50 places out of first. Then came the road-race, a tough course with steep hills. Actually it was Mike’s specialty event, but not that weekend. "After eight laps I had nothing left and had to puli out of the Tace." It was a 14-lap race, so Mike missed out on any consideration for the aforementioned teams. The following weekend was trip to Victoria, where Mike decided not to enter the team time trials after consultation with his coaches. "It was a Tuesday night event and we felt time off was of more value." At Victoria, he did "okay" in the criterium. But at the time trial next day, it was another *not-so-great" effort. He wound up with a mech- anical problem in the road race that curtailed his effort to catch up with the pack again. Gastown in Vancouver was next on the agenda. Mike said it was the best race in B.C. with over $30,000 in prizes and attendance by numerous American pros. "It’s a super-fast criterium and after my Victoria outing I decided to pass on this one. By then I decided to take some rest and come home for a while." After a week in Terrace where he "took things easy", Mike is now back into serious training. He'll be competing in the July 14 triathlon with wheelchair ace Paul Clark and swimmer Doug McKen- zie, then heads south on July 25. "There’s a race at Fort Langley on the 27th. I’ve trained on this course and it’s well suited for my style." The next big event is a five-day, five-stage race at Prince George, where Mike could be in harness with a new team. He said he has to do well in a couple of events in order to take in the B.C. Road Race championships at the end of August. Finally, he’ll wind up his season in an eight- day, nine-stage race at Spokane in the fall. Future plans include returning home until the end of December, then looking at spending time in California in the new year. He’s also looking at a possible European race jaunt for a coupie of months in 1992.
