Spearn said that the program strives io iden- tify individual financial problems and suggests possible solution ser- vices, such as budgeting advice, mediation with creditors, debt pools, orderly payment of debts, and also advice on _ personal bankruptcy. “This is keeping in mind that debtors repay their debts in a manner consis- tent with their ability while still maintaining a reasonable standard of living.”’ Spearn has been.a debt counsellor with Terrace and District Community Services from 1978 to 1983. The program, funded by the Ministry of Consumer and Cor- porate Affairs during that time, had to be discontinued due to a lack of funds, said Spearn. I felt that the service was very much needed in this area, so I continued on a volunteer basis and still work very closely with the ministry. Guy Pocklington, debt counsellor with the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, will be visiting Terrace and Kitimat. For ap- pointments on June 11, 12 and 13, call 635-3069 weekdays between the hours of 1 p.m, and 4 p.m. Because Pocklington can only travel to this area about once every three months, Ruth Spearn will be available to counsel at the same number, by appointment only.
