He ‘Received Name, “Blanket Bill’ Jarman,- aged 94 years, one of the oldest pioneers in the northwest,. has passed away at Ferndale Wash. “Blanket Bill” came to the Paci- fic coast in the year 1848. on a Hudson Bay trading boat. He was the man who heralded the white race to Vancouver Island in the old, old days, and whose early. history may be said to’ re- present the foundation stone of the wonderful structure of civi- lization which this part of ‘the western world now represents, but gone the way of all flesh, first of the white race to settle on the. island, ‘‘Blankeé Bill’? was the last, or very nearly the last, of the pioneers, his great age spanning the first century of civilization.in this far west, The stories that could be told of his experiences in the fa¥-off days, when this island was the ex- elusive haunt of the Indians, are numerous, and of that spectacu- lar hue which tradition and nature ascribe to such ciyvcum- stances and surroundings, but, even 80, there can searcely be any tale connected with his name more redolent ofthe life of the country at that particular. time than that which describes the manner in which he became pos- fsessed of the peculiar cognomen which he had borne ever since. He was a sailor and it is re- ported that, together with the erew of his ill-fated ship, he was driven ashore in the Nootka country by the eccentric. wind. The country. was infested with In- }/dians and when they detected the “fareigners’”’ they made a-raid upon them. others were killed but the re- cords of the time indicate that Bill was the only representative. the others escaping in their boats or suecumbing to the attack. Bill day an account of his condition, reached the ears of Governor Douglas, the first governor of the colony, and realizing the. precar- ious condition of the sailor he ‘sent word to the Indians, that he 7 would be pleased to. treat with | - them for the release of the pris-|* ner. ~ propositions it wad decided that} uncongenial. surroundings andun- sought companions on payment of a certain rangom by the gover- nor.
