Vietovia, Mareh 30.—Plans for a xYndicate for the developement of coal resources around Telkwa, in Northern British Columbia, with the construc- tion of a railway from Telkwa west- ward through the Copper River Coun- try, are leing made the subject of ful- lest’ enquirey by the Provincial Gov- ernment, accor ding to a statement pre. pared by Premier Tolmie and given out |}, at his office. Incidentally it indien- tes that the government is opposed to the granting of large tracts of land to aid railway construction witheut nuik- ing sure sueh projects will be of yeal benefit to the province, The concern interested in the devel- opment of the coal fields in the Telk- wa district, and. the! construction of a railroad from there to tide water at Kitimatt, has been incorporated as tho Kitimat Telkwa Railway Company. It had planned to ask-the Legislature at its recent session for ‘a charter, but the company did not press its claims. No bill authorizing construction was passed by the house, ‘but the govern- ments intention, according to the state- ment by the Premier, is to investigate the whole schiénie during the year. Tu his statement describing this im- portant ‘project and he government's attitude towards it, the Premier said: “Some time last fall a plan was out- lined by a solicitor representing cer- tain interests to. operate coal areas on “the Telkwa and Copper tivers, in con- junction with a certain railway to be completed between Telkwa and Copper City. The question was discussed very fully. In connection with the Proposal it was desired that a land grant of. 10- 000 acres per mile be given in ald of the construction of the road, the land to be applied in settlement purposes. The executive poitited out that it had heen the policy for some years in Brit- ish Columbia, to avoid as fir as pos- sible, tying up large blocks: of public land and that ‘before doing so, it was desirable, -in the first place to serious- ly consider the possible and probable udvantiges accrning; In the seeond place, to review the territory to be af- fected by such a concession! and in the third pluce (and this was most import- | ant) for the government to be assured of the financial, ability of the propés- ers of the plan to.effectuate what they proposed to do. “The solicitor putting forth the pro- posal coneurved in the importance nt- | tuching tu the fiuancial side_of the question, and tuderook to, produce as- strunecs to this connection. One of the subjects which will be up for discussion will be the matter of a new hospital building. For twenty- five years the present building bas sidered economical to remodel or add to it, a’ no matter what sum was spent upon it it would still be an old building. The present building is also far from being modern. The funds for a new building, it i: understood, can be secured if the peo- ple of the district get behind the move. The public will be given an opportun- ity to express its opinion on the most finportint subject that has been up for some little time.
