The rally, organized by the Central American Support Committee, was one of a week of events in solidarity with El Salvador set to coincide with the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Romero. Escobar told demonstrators that the U.S. “‘is using (Salvadoran president) Napoleon Duarte to present a democratic image while they escalate — the war against our people."’ He urged Canadians to continue to demonstrate _ their opposition to the “immoral U.S. policy in Central America.”
